Spin-off on Mer's post

FH and I are going to a wedding this weekend in Baltimore. The bride is childhood friend's with FH but they definitely aren't as close as they used to be. I'm friendly with her but we don't know her FH at all. From what I have heard their wedding is a buffet. Any idea how much we should give them??

$100-$180, no more than that either. Weddings outside of NYC are always cheaper (Maybe not in Cali, but you know what I mean). They're probably paying $40-$50 per plate considering it's a buffet.

they are jewish but FH and I decided we aren't giving them a denomination of 18. We were thinking $250 or $300. I wish we were getting married first so I could see what she would give us. I hate to give her money and then have her give us a table cloth or some sh*t.

This is not always true...

My cousin got married at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach and I know for a fact that they paid $100+pp... and sadly many of their guests did not take it into account, and gave them really cheap gifts.

I always give the same amount, no matter where the wedding is located. Depending on how close I am to the couple, I might give a little less, but never only $100 for me and FH...

If you were thinking $250-300 then I would say do $250. We usually do $200 for a not so close friend, figure, after everything, $200 is a nice gift.

And when I'm invited to weddings and I know they're invited to mine, I just feel like they will return the gift with the same thing (so it's kind of like an even trade)... Hopefully I'm not the only one who thinks that way!!!

I would still give $250 or more. Expect them to return with the same amount, I don't think people should give more just b/c you are getting married in New York.

they'll most likely give you back the same amount you give them. so it's almost like a loan, so i'd give $200 - 250.

let's hope so from what I've heard people in FH's hometown don't typically give money for gifts
