Spin-off to Going out to Dinner Thread

Original post by mrswask

Anyone else have 'problems' with going out with certain people to eat?
DH and I went out with two other couples last night and as usual, the bill gets split and we end up paying a LOT more than the food we ordered. I know restaurants hate doing separate checks and we never would anyway, because it would seem weird, but I feel like we are often faced with this.

Dh's old roommate and his girlfriend are the worst!!! They are MAJOR drinkers and can seriously rack up a bar bill at the table that's as much as the food! DH's solution is to drink a lot too, because if we're going to have to 'pay' for their drinks anyway, he might as well have a lot too! I can seriously have one drink, tops!
I hate going out to eat with them and try to avoid it at all costs!

Anyone else have these issues? Any advice or solutions?
THanks!

I agree- my MOH and I were once in a situation where a friend of ours ordered wine, dessert, an expensive entree and then wanted to split the check three ways. My MOH is in a PhD program, and on a tight budget. She only ordered an entree and was offended that she was expected to subsidize part of our other friend's meal when she specifically ordered within her budget. Should she not go out to dinner with friends who have full time jobs and more disposable income? With couples it may be different but I think sometimes people are not sensitive to the money issues of others.

Exactly! It really stinks when you go out on a limited budget and order within your means but then have to pay so much more because others had more. I'm not talking about special occasions...if we are celebrating something special I'm all for throwing extra in.....but for just a regular dinner it stinks.

My DH and I do not drink, and I don't think that if we KNOW we only ordered $50 of food and the bill 150, we should be half of that..my DH's boss has done this to us a few time, he orders bottles of wine, and we have to pay for 1/2 of them, no thanks....I don't think that is proper, sorry, JMO...

I guess that's my point and a lot of people don't seem to be getting it. I guess we can't go out to eat with people anymore then. I do not nickel and dime people - but if I'm making a point to stay withing a budget and ordering like so, I do not think it's right that I am subsidizing your surf and turf and your 5 martinis!

When you're on a budget - you're aware of what you order.
When you're not on a budget....you're not aware.
So I think people not on a budget should be respectful and understanding of people on a budget.....it's that simple.

it's like that episode on Friends......

Actually, I hate it when people try to pay for the exact amount that they ate. If you go out to dinner with people, I believe you should fully expect to split the bill and not start picking it apart.

Ahh, I agree!! There's nothing worse than going to dinner with a bunch of people and when the bill comes having someone say 'Well, I just had a burger...'. Ugh!! It'll all even out over time - one time I'll pay more for what I ordered, another time they will.

This is how DH and I feel.

I am with you..I hate when people pick apart the bill, drinkers or non drinkers...I don't understand why non drinkers would go out to dinner with drinkers..someone adding my drinks up for me would def kill my buzz..and really how much beer/liquor is someone drinking..maybe 3 beers with dinner that is only 12.00...so split is 6...I don't want to be picked out over 6.00

What's wrong with non drinkers going out to dinner with drinkers? I often go out with a large group of people, and it's up to each person's discretion whether or not he or she drinks that night. I think people who drink should expect to pay more for their night out than those who don't. I try to order within my and DH's budget, and I don't want to pay for other people's appetizers, drinks and dessert if all I have is an entree. However, when people order relatively equivalent things, I don't see a need to figure out whose meal cost 2 or 3 dollars more. I have no trouble paying a few extra dollars - I know it will equal out in the end, but when there's a large discrepancy I think each individual or couple should cover what they chose to order.

I understand what you all are saying and it is annoying to get nickeled and dimed, but with some people, it never evens out, because they ALWAYS take advantage. In general, I am OK with splitting a check, but with certain people, I just stopped eating out with them.

Agreed.

I actually have a couple that I refuse to go out with anymore, not because of the bill issue but because she's a total PITA. She'll ***** that the coffee is too hot or too cold, there's not enough sauce on the entree, can she have a third helping of salad, ugghhh it goes on and on....I feel so bad for whoever gets her as a customer when she goes out because she's just such a pill

ive been lucky with people Ive gone to dinner with. I'm not one for splitting up the bill.. dosnt matter who drinks what... usually we split down the middle or one picks up the check- depending how many people we/i have in the party..
