Spinoff-Anyone use a curling iron?

I feel like everyone here has curly hair!

I have mostly straight hair & I am trying to learn how to curl it for special occassions. I have a curling iron, hot rollers & velcor rollers. I can never get anything to work.

Do I need a better curlign iron ( I think mine is conair)?

Or should I just leave it to the professionals?

UPDATE: I bought a professional ceramic one, now I am just trying to figre out how to use it!

Hmm... do you use any hair products? My FSIL has really thick straight hair and I usually use lots of hairspray when I curl her hair for her.

I'd get a professional curling iron. Do youw ant curl curls or wavy curls? I don't know much about the curl curls but I know for wavy curls you should get a 1 to 1 1/4 inch barrel. Take small sections of hair and twist it to the scalp, then curl it. When you curl it, do each section of hair in a different way so you get that natural wave to it.

I do! I have a cheaper curler. You have to use a lot of hair spray to get it to stay, and don't brush the curls out. I did that for years and they never stayed.

I have very straight hair too. My steam rollers worked the best on it.

I do get better results with hair spray, but too many products make my hair limp. Or dirty.

I think I do need a professinal iron. I dont' know how to finda good one though.

I want waves, but my hair is too short to get too big of a curling Iron. I think what I have now 1' & I can make about a turn & a half with it.

According to Jonathon Antin's website (don't laugh) He suggests a 3/4 inch & if the curls are too tight, you can brush them out, but won't that make them fall out?

Farah, I have steam rollers, but they are too big for my hair. Even when it was longer, they wouldn't really last.

I know my hair IS curlable. It was really curly for my wedding & stayed that way all night.

When I want to get my hair curly, I use velcro rollers at night..they are very soft. I don't do it too much because I like it straight, but my hair is kind of wavy and fine

my hair is straight and i use hairspray and a curling iron to curl it.....for some reason, my hair seems to like to curl, so it usually stays.
i also like velcro rollers though....but be careful with them - i once burned a chunk of hair out using them with a blow dryer....not pretty.....and very smelly

Yeah, I wouldn't brush them but you can break them up with your fingers, just pull them apart a little and pull them down a little - it should do the trick.

I'd get a professional ceramic curling iron. They're not like hairdryers, where they jump from $40 to about $100 for a professional one. They're just under $40 for the hot tools ones I've seen.

Thank you! I didn't know about ceramic curling irons at all!

It's good to know they are not that expensive.

Gold n Hot and Ceramic Tools are two good brands. Rickys sells them all. Chi makes them too but IMO they're waaaaaay overpriced for the same thing. I just wouldn't go the Conair, Vidal Sasson (sp?) route.

I was actually thinking of going to Ricky's. It is the only place near me that sells that stuff! I will try to go at lunch one day this wek.

Me too! It's the best though. Ask them for help, they'll steer you in the right direction.

Well, I am pretty sure the curling irons are way up high, so they will definitely have to help anyway!
Thanks for all of your help, Eilleen!

Re: Spinoff-Anyone use a curling iron?

Hey Eileen-- I got my curling Iron! At Ricky's!

I got a Gold n Hot ceramic 5/8 inch barrel. The next size up was 1 inch & that is too big for my hair, since it is now above my shoulders.

For anyone, intersted, I highly reccomend!

I played with it last night--I had to put it on pretty high, but it worked so well. It was all sorta crazy, though, b/c I don't know what I am doign--but there were definitely curls. Lots of 'em.

And they seemed to stay, but I did brush it out before I went to bed.

I used Paul Mitchell Heat Seal ( lso reccomeded) on dry hair before I curled & then hairspay on the curls before I started touching them & loosening them alittle.

I think I am going to try it again, using wider section of hair at a time & not doing the short top layers.

Thanks again for all your help!
