Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
For racial or religious reasons? For other reasons?

Luckily no - we've been blessed that both our families are supporting us 100%. I guess it has to do a lot w/ the fact that we have the exact same background.

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
We're interfaith so there has been a LOT of friction, mostly from his side. What I hate the most are the 'helpful' hints people give us about how interfaith couples end up divorced and with screwed up kids

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
The biggest hurdle I felt I had to face being with FH were my parents. They really instilled their desire for a KOREAN son in law ever since I was little. That being said, they completely came around and have embraced FH. Still so in awe and grateful for that. The parents of one of my closest childhood friend are completely against interracial relationships however. It is sad since I had planned to invite them to the wedding but now I don't want their negativity there. I feel that they will be making snide comments or passing judgement.
Their two daughters don't plan on marrying korean either. I can't wait for that volcanic eruption!

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
so far we've been lucky. We've been together for about 8 years and his family is amazing. Mine seems to adore him as well. Our only problem will be the actual wedding bc everyone is opinionated - especially MY Mom and I don't want that drama.
I've decided to do almost everything on my own with my FH and my best friend. I'll decide what 'job' to give my mom eventually so she wont be hurt.

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
Yes, because we are interfaith and because we are getting married 2 months after FSIL.FMIL claims to be very open about all religions and races and such, but its more of a 'You can do whatever you want, just not in MY family...interfaith marriage is okay but not for MY son' attitude...also she doesn't like me because she has preconceived notions about me that she never bothered to correct by actually getting to know me.
FSIL thinks we're only getting married because she is and is pissed that we are getting married 2 months after her...well sorry that I want my 2 remaining grandparents to be at my wedding and they can only travel during the summer...

thank god no ... at least not yetWe have to go in to pre-marital counseling and I'm hoping my pastor doesn't give us a hard time since I'm a christian and my FH is agnostic
(but my FH comes to church with me every Sunday, and has since we began dating over a year ago )

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
My mom who doesnt even go to church is very upset about us not getting married at the catholic church. She said she is hurt and not happy. and i dont understand why, if she barely goes to church. But she is more about what the rest of my fam is going to think... We are still having a religious ceremony at the RH and to me it doesnt matter if im in 4 walls, what matters is that we are getting married, exchanging vows and still doing it under the eyes of GOD... I go to church more than my mom. it was a hard decision for me as well, but due to us living in Manhattan RH 45 min away, our guest live all over the place, we decided to do everything under one location. I am happy and i knwo i will have GOD's blessing... Hopefully she stops complaining to me about it.

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
That really ***** when parents cant see beyond RACE and RELIGION.. at the end LOVE is what matters. My parents were the same way, i am marrying within my Nationality and Religion, but i remember being a teen them always being adamant about it, and i used to tell them, you rather me be with a 'bad' person becuase we share the same race and religion then a good person who is completely different???I did end up usually dating within my 'own' but dont really knwo if it was becuase i heard it so muchh growing up or jsut becuase it was who i was attracted to... ughhh PARENTS... I love them though!

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
The biggest thing we had to deal with was my parents. My FH has been out of work since Christmas Eve of 2008, and has been searching religiously every day for a job since then. My parent's think he is 'lazy' and isn't doing all he can do to try to support me. They are very traditional and believe that it's the man's job to bring home the paycheck and the woman's job is to cook, clean, and manage the household. Considering my mom was a SAHM her entire life, they don't understand how times have changed, and that isn't how it is anymore. They've warmed up to him a bit, but still aren't happy about us.

how do deal with that? I'm in the beginnings of all of this, and the comments from his family are starting already. From how to raise our future kids to how to keep our home. stressful =/

Re: Spinoff from 2010: Have you faced opposition to your wedding
First off, his mother now calls me more than him... i end up talking to her more than my own parents, And i dread her calls because its chit chat for a few minutes and then a million questions about me converting or when we're getting married. When I go to dinner, i get jokes from the family that they are going to come over and check or frig to see if everythings kosher. I was already told our kids will have to be raised jewish and they have to go to hebrew school and eat kosher.... my FH doesn't even do any of that! His mother comments on our home, we have a modest apartment in order to save $ and she calls it a crap hole. His mother tried to change my name because my name is too 'catholic'.
