How does this work if you take FH last name but you want to use your maiden name at work. Is it legal?

This is what I'm doing. I am changing over my tax and pay info but keeping my maiden name at work. My email and contact info will stay the same.

My office just asked me if I wanted my name changed in the directory and on my e-mail. I'm pretty sure that if you are changing your name on your SS Card, that your paychecks at least have to match.

Usually your office HR/MIS folks will let you keep your maiden name at work even if your paycheck says something else (I.e. they keep your email as Jane Smith even though you changed it to Jane Jones)

yes it's legal. As long as you are not intending to defraud anyone - you can legally use both your maiden name and your married name.
On my marriage license, I put that I wanted to take DH's last name. However, I never changed my name. I put it on the marriage license so that if I ever want to take his name (with SS, DMV, etc.), I can do so easily by just showing my marriage certificate.

I am changing my name but I am going to keep my email address and business cards, etc. I have created a name for myself in my area of law and I think it would hurt me to change my name now. But for everything outside of work I am changing my name.

I plan on doing that too initially. I'm a speech therapist and don't want to change my name professionally just yet. At my work, no one calls you by your married name anyway :P
