SPINOFF: Godparents

SPINOFF: Godparents

Would you be upset if your sibling had kids and repeatedly did not ask you to be the godparent?

I already know that me and FH are going to be the godparents of my sister and brother in law's first child, but FH's sister is about to have her 2nd baby. For her first child, she had her friends be the godparents. Nothing wrong with that I guess. They don't even talk to one of them anymore though. I was really offended for FH. Now she's about to have another one, and FH doubts he'll be the godfather of this one too. I think it's probably b/c she doesn't like me. Anyway, it just pisses me off big time...grrrrrrrrr......

sorry..had to vent...FH acts like ti doens't phase him, but it must. I know how I'd feel if my sis weren't picking us!

I am the Godparent of my best friend’s son.

If I ever have children (I hope) and assuming I’d ever allow my children to be ‘exhibited’ (rather use another word, but I’ll leave that out for now) in such a manner, I would never choose a close sibling or relative to be the god parent.

I would feel that they should (I hope) already be such an important part of my child’s life. Supposedly a God Parent is to help with the religious up brining of the child. Some still feel it’s a matter of trusting their child to another person for their moral/spiritual well being in the absence of or in addition to the parents. Others think it’s trusting a person to ‘take over’ in all ways in the event of the parent’s death. That’s not always the case.

Try not to feel too offended.

I have just two sisters and growing up we were very close (age and otherwise). Now, I am the oldest with 2 children and one on the way. One sis has four children under four and the other has one and one on the way. I asked my sis to be GM for my daughter, and yet collectively (with almost SIX nieces and nephews) I have NEVER been asked and it does hurt. DH is even more upset about the situation. To me, it is sad . . .

interesting point of view -- boosh and i have agreed to 'keep it in the family' when it comes to godparents, when the time comes

my brother and sil have 2 kids and i am not a godparent to either. for the first they picked sil's sister and my brother's best friend. for the second they picked my sister. i guess you're not allowed to have two godmothers, but it would have been nice to be picked. so when my sister had her first baby she made me the godmother, basically as a consolation prize i think, but i'll take whatever i can get.

I would be kind of hurt. Even if your SIL doesnt like you and that was the reason, she doesnt have to have you as Godmother, she can at least ask her brother IMO. My brother is Godfather to my son, and I cannot imagine asking anyone else even though DH has several brothers. (We had his sister, not my brother's wife as Godmother) This time with my daughter, we are having my BIL (DH's oldest bro) and SIL. But just because I really like them both, I didnt feel obligated to have a couple as the Godparents.

But what can you do about it...she can pick whoever she wants really but Im sorry she isnt being more considerate of your DH. IMO, the Godparent thing is just an honorable title, not really so much that I expect any of them to shape my children's religious upbringing - that's why they have parents.

I also agree with keeping in the family.
