Spinoff ---- Long Island TEACHERS thread........Writers??????

I am a substitute teacher on LI and I am having such a hard time finding a position as a full time teacher. My resume is everywhere...I have a 4.0 GPA, great experience, and a great education, but nobody is calling!

So, after thinking about what to do with myself, I realized that I would love to use my education (B.A. English / M.S. Education) and try to get a job as a writer.
SO>>>> My question is ...............

Is anyone employed as a writer on Long Island or NYC? Writing is my passion and I would like to get into writing for a children's magazine or an educational magazine.

Advice?

Suggestions?

Anything would be extremely helpful!

:)

Thanks! (So sorry for being off topic!)

I think magazine writing positions are actually harder to come by than teaching positions! I have 3 friends working for magazines (only one is a regular writer, the other two are in editor positions). All three had unpaid internships during summers throughout college and were offered positions after that. It seems like it is an area that is very much who you know. What college did you get your undergrad degree? Maybe that career center could help you get started? I have also found there are more jobs in publishing/editing, though just to warn you those types of jobs pay very, very little. Good luck!

Well, I was a teacher, and am currently looking for a job in publishing, and it is very difficult. There are lots of people out there competing for a small number of jobs. Also you have to be willing to start off doing something like proof reading, and not getting paid too much.

I second the above info. You'll probably, eventually have better luck finding a teaching position (plus, you're guaranteed to make more money starting out). I write for a living, but was able to get jobs because I basically worked for free or very little money throughout college to get experience. It would be much harder to start out when you need a job that pays decently right away.

If writing is really your passion, I'd say go for it, but don't depend on it for a decent living right away. If you're just looking at it as an alternative to teaching, I'd say stick with teaching.
