I was raised Catholic, but haven't gone to church in years. I'm still getting marred in church though. I know I should start going. I believe in heaven. I think you just need something to believe in sometimes.

I just think it's wrong for the 'people' that reaise their kids with no religion. I just can't nor will I see my child being not baptized. Let them decide for themselves when they grow up if they don't want to be a part of it.

I was not raised with religion...are you saying I must be a bad person? or are my parents bad?

IMHO I'm a pretty decent person...I smile and say thank you to all the people I interact with...I help people out in many ways

why should my parents raise me with something they don't believe....and further why should I do that to my own children...

would you raise your child Hindu if you didn't believe...

I am very annoyed with this comment...

let's not go here b/c I am not saying your a bad person. I am just stating my beliefs. Iim sure your a very sweet person and did not mean to offend. But I do know that some people have problemss\ trying to get married in a church b/c they weren't baptized. And they get upset over it. But then again I don't understand why anyone would want to be married in the Church of God if they are not religious then we get into hypocracism...

Re: Spinoff of afterlife post.....how faithful are you?

just read more of the post...

the major religions are connected..

judism has the old testament,

catholic religion believes in the old testament but also believed in Jesus as the son of god, and created the new testament, and is less strict in practices..

islam believes in the same as judism and catholic, but believes jesus was not the son, and wasnt the last person, they believe Muhammed(i think) was the last person.. and they made the Quran which has similarities to the bible..

i dont think people need to go to church/temple to be faithful and religious.. in college we had a priest visit us, he told us its more important to lead a good life, help others, be kind, etc.. more important than going to service once a week..

and i agree with what someone else wrote.. some of the people who seem to be the most 'holy'.. are really hypocrits, mean and nasty to lots of people.. thats why i think i was frustrated at one point, practicing being a good person is more important than going to church three times a week and serving on church commitee boards...

I would have to agree with you. I know my parents thought they were “helping” me by not shoving religion down my throat the way their parents did to them, but as an adult I feel completely disconnected from religion and spirituality. And not having any spiritual comfort in life is making me feel very sad.

It’s a tough call to make. You want to raise your kids to think for themselves, but there has to be some sort of foundation to build on, IMO.

ETA: In no way do I believe that no religion = no morals. I feel that despite the lack of religion and/or spirituality in my life, my parents raised me to be moral, ethical, polite, and in general a good person.

I like you

BellaBella-I see your point now.
Many of my family members got married in church, had their children baptised but have never set foot in a church since. I don't really get that...

Re: Spinoff of afterlife post.....how faithful are you?

also one thing that frustrated me, was that we are all raised what our parents are..
if our parents are catholic thats what were raised.., if our parents are athiest thats what we're raised...

how do we know our parents have the right religion??????

we're basically raised that way, and when were young we dont question it, we dont get presented all the religions and told which one do you believe most, which one do you want to follow.. then by the time we're free to make our own decisions and possibly change(maybe around 16 years old when we can drive to the religion of our choice) By then for most people we already believe what our parents believe, and are locked into that religion..

edited to add... i think that raising a kid with some sort of religion or belief in a higher being is important because, it helps to give the kids faith and hope early on.. it may help them to get through tough times...

I don't understand either...what I don't understand more is the ones that do get married in the church not having/wanting any religious background.

i don't think this is 100% true...
you even said yourself that you dont practice much anymore...isn't that a decision you made?
you could have decided to seek out some other belief systems as an adult, no?

Agreed! BUt I think this ties into what butterfly was saying about just following what our parents always did.

Good point Butterfly...
You don't know if it's the right religion or in my case, you'd prefer no religion at all. This is what turned me off to religion (and politics-but that's another story ).

You are right in your own belief. All I'm saying is if my child grows up not wanting to be a part of the church, then it's his/her choice. But I am not going to deprive them from a baptism from the beginning. It's MY choice then. It's not like its hurting them to put a little holy water on them..but it's not guarantedd that your child will want to stay unreligious either..

Re: Spinoff of afterlife post.....how faithful are you?

at one point i stopped going to church.... but for the last three years ive been going -every week -with my fiance.. if we occasionally miss a weekend we go durring the week...

i actually took a course in college on religions, one on the western ones, one on the eastern ones, and after both of them i still feel like catholic religion is the best for me..
even though i stopped going to church for 2 years, i still believed in the catholic religion, still prayed, still beleived in god...and in heaven

No..I don't think there's a right or wrong...
But what I do think is about 99.7% of the world's problems are people who think that THEIR religion is RIGHT.
My father raised us with the notion (and it ties very much into the conflicts in Ireland) that the Episcopalian religion is the right religion and anyone who is Roman Catholic is wrong and evil. We were raised with the belief that there was no other religion...and coming from a sick, demented man, it's a real hard thing to believe.
My feelings on religion aren't based solely on how I was raised. But I look around and see all the fighting being stirred up usually based on religion (and it's been this way for thousands of years).

i believe in god, and im catholic

however many religions believe in god, or some higher being equivlent to god... I dont think the other religions are wrong because theyre not catholic.. they have their own way that they practice... in the end we are all believing in the same thing, they just go about it a different way than me, which i dont think is wrong.....

This is a touchy subject for me as you can probably tell!

well you talk about hypocracy...

I would be a total hypocrit if I baptised my child!!

would you have your child take part of a Hindu or Buddhist ritual...just in case they might want to be that religion when they get older...?
