Re: spinoff of my own: teachers???
the video is pretty simple. there's a book you get and it tells you all of the requirements for the video - how much instruction time, how much group time, how much time total, etc. I forget how much it all is though. i'm pretty sure you could do it for summer school - unless it says otherwise in the booklet. good luck!!

Re: spinoff of my own: teachers???
Man oh man that was so many years ago I hate to remember. I have been teaching for almost 10 years already and was one of the first groups of people required to take the NY State tests after the NTE was being phased out. I work in a psychiatric day treatment center teaching special ed to kids with serious emotional disturbance and learning disabilities. However, I have licenses in both ELED and SPED. In order to complete my ELED certification, I had to teach an elementary level lesson to the class I was teaching. I was most concerned with the timing aspect - making sure that the requirements for individual time was met. So, as I often do with my students anyway, I gave them warning that I would set a timer and they would have x amount of minutes to work. When they hear the timer, they had to stop. They need a structured classroom setting anyway so it worked to my advantage.
Word of advice though. Make sure you check with any principal or supervisor that the students in your video have photo releases. The only reason I mention this is because there may be children involved in family issues, law suits or custody battles and the parents want their privacy respected. This is always the case where I work because we are day treatment and are HIPAA compliant.

I did a math lesson with my 4th graders on elapsed time. The kids had Judy clocks and they had to use them to solve word problems.

I graduated in 2000 and dont have to do the video. I am under the impression that it was for the newer graduates.

Re: spinoff of my own: teachers???
I teach first grade, and I just did my video in March. I did a phonics lesson on the long e sound. Basically I gathered the class together by my chart and we sang the long e song...brainstormed long e words as a group...then broke into smaller groups and they built long e words with magnetic letters, wrote them too and then we shared them at the end. BORING...but very structured!
PS- it was 30 minutes roughly, and I passed.

Re: spinoff of my own: teachers???
I just did mine in the beginning of June. My lesson was on probability using candy (5th grade). I read the guidelines at least 3-4 times and it's pretty easy to follow (between 20-30 minutes, NON-INTERRUPTED, 10 minutes of which must be non-instructional work i.e. kids working in groups, partnerships, etc.)
I would call the office and let them know you're doing the video so they can put off making any announcements during it. Granted, I did that, and apparently my princpial didn't care and we had a fire drill when I was 15 minutes in!! Needless to say, I was FUMING MAD, but nothing I could do, so I just had to start it all over again when we got back to the room.

In the booklet it spefically states that photo releases are NOT needed for this so I wouldn't worry about that (of course it can't hurt to remove a child if there is an issue, but you don't have to go crazy making sure all kids have a release).

I have heard a story from a coteacher that said one woman accidently sent in her wedding video and still passed. i have yet to do it, but all i know is that you need to follow the time restriction to a t.

I've heard that story also.
Honestly, how do they watch ALL of the videos that are submitted?
