DH's attitude is that we have land investments and that is good enough...
I, fortunately, do not share the same views
it doesn't have to be in a 401k or 403b or whatever other employer retirement plan
but just try to think how much of your annual salary

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
My company matches 100% of the first 3% that we contribute, and then 50% of the next 3% that we contribute. If I didn't contribute at least 6%, it would be like giving away free money.

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
The company I work for matches $ to $. I put in 10% of my gross salary and they match it. Also put in about $1,200/month in a separate checking account for cash savings.

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
Almost 10% of my salary with company match up to 5% for the last 8.5 yrs.....Fidelity Investments!
ETA: DH also does 10% of his salary and he has company match up to 5 also and he also has a company sponsored pension plan which i dont have... we are both fully vested.
I also have a ROTH IRA that I used to contribute to but havent in awhile.
Our plan is to be millionaires by retirement!

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
In the last company I worked for I save 10% of my salary. They matched $ for $ up to 5%. The benefits were so great, I also got ESOP, stock options and a pension. But I got laid off last June.
My new company is private and they don't do any matching. I took a pay cut so I can't afford to contribute more than 6% of my salary.

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
I put in 7%...my company matches 50%. I also have some other mutual funds that I bought when I first starting working full time. I add to them when I can...but I never take anything out. When I bought my house (before I met FH), I didn't take anything out for my DP....my dad said I should have...but mom said don't do it!
My mom asks me all the time, if I checked my funds...and I always say...I don't watch them everyday since I don't plan on taking the money out. Ask me again in 30 years. LOL!

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
I do 5% but have NO company match. Scott does 6% and has company match and is fully vested. I plan on increasing mine to 6% this year. I also have an IRA fund that was a roll-over from an old 401K plan.

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
I do 15% in my 401k and my company matches up to the first $3000. I am also fully vested. I am going to try and keep it at 15% or higher for as long as I can since FH dons't have a 401k.

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
I'm very concerned about having enough money to fund a comfortable retirement!!
I contribute 8% to my 401K (co. matches 5). I also hold a couple of stocks and mutual funds, and an IRA that was a rollover from a previous job.

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
My company only has three people. We do not have a 401k or any matching. I have been under-employed for 2 years and really have not been able to save anything- have not made any bonuses, nothing I have been looking for work but the market is AWEFUL (things happen, which is why i am a strong defender of SS).
DH's company is pretty good- he only contributes 3% but does get matching. Maybe when I am able to get a better job and make more $ we'll both be able to save more.
we do save a few hundred every month in savings... and I pulled all the money out of my mutual funds b/c I had putnam an I got PO'd after their whole scandal.

Re: Spinoff on investing for retirement
I do my 401 K, at 15%, but my employer does not match.
I also have Profit Sharing Plan that he si supposed to put 15% into, but we will see. Sometimes it is a little less.

I would aks them to set up a 401k, I asked my boss, and he did. He doesn't match but at least I get to put money away. Also we only have 3 employess too. He set ours up thru fidelity,a dn it doesn't cost him any money, just the time he ahs to mail the check into Fidelity that we withholds.
