Spinoff to aliciahelene's question: US vs. Foreign adoptions

I'm just curious.....Most of the time when I hear someone talk about adopting the child is from another country. I'm sure their are a lot of unwanted children in the US. Is it easier and/or cheaper to adopt children from foreign countries? Is it the legal implications?

As far as I know, US state adoptions can take a VERY long time and approval can be tough. Private adoptions can be much more expensive, because you will usually have to pay all the medical expenses of the birth mother. It's can also be pricey to adopt from another country, but you can get a child much faster. There's still a somewhat lenghthy process and some coutries require you stay there for a month during the adoption process.
I know that when my sister and I were adopted, my parnets went through the state to get my sister and waited almost 3 years. I was through a private adoption so they just had to wait the duration of the pregnancy.

I think also with US adoptions due to laws their is a greater risk of the parents 'reclaiming' the child! And alot of people dont want to deal with that!

My BIL just adopted a little girl from China, her parents just abandonded her when she was a day old, so there is less risk of that.

There are certain states that are much more strict with birth parents rights. For example, in Washington State, the birth parent has only 24 hours to 'change' her mind. A friend of a friend just did a private adoption from Washington and it was around 70,000. On the flip side of things, another friend adopted from Catholic Charities in NJ and she has a beautiful healthy boy and girl. Two seperate adoptions. Both ran around 14,000.
