just wanted thoughts on this. is it better to pay off the debt with money from savings or pay it monthly and keep the money in savings?

Re: spinoff to cc debt
It depends on the interest rate you are getting in your savings account vs the interest rate on your credit card.
For instance, if you are getting 2% in your savings account and paying 10% interest on your credit cards then you are negative 8%. That means you are spending more by not paying your credit cards off. If it's the opposite way and you are getting 10% on your savings and paying 2% to the credit card company then it would pay to keep it in your savings..
one caveat..if you continue to pay off only the minimum on your credit cards, you will end up paying more in interest over the life of the debt than you would earn in your savings account. Pay more than the minimum if you can.
Lastly, there is no savings account that gives you 10% or even close. Most credit card rates are way higher than savings accounts. This is the reality, which means that paying off your credit cards is the way to go as long as you don't strap yourself and have enough saved for emergencies. Certainly don't empty your bank account, but try to pay it off as quickly as possible.

Another thing to consider is making sure you aren't overpaying. I would keep some saving as a just in case fund. A lot of times people wind up overpaying on their debt and then do not have money to spare when something comes up. It becomes a vicious cycle because they then have to charge for emergency situations.

I do both- some months I pay large chucks and some months a pay smaller amounts and save instead
