With gas prices about to eclipse the $3 per gallon mark, New Yorkers are afraid someone will swipe the fuel from their tanks - so they're doing something about it. Sales of locking gas caps are on the rise in auto parts stores across the city.
It is a trend that is sure to continue with Hurricane Katrina ravaging the Gulf Coast, stifling oil production and sending oil prices skyward.
But it didn't take a hurricane to stir Peter Carroll to action.
Last week, Carroll, 52, an imaging technologist from Brooklyn, drove his Volvo station wagon round-trip from his home in Prospect Heights to Williamsburg twice - a total of about 15 miles. The car's tank was originally two-thirds full, but when he moved the wagon to the opposite side of the street later in the week, he noticed its tank was empty.
After his car was mysteriously drained of gas again days later, he decided to cough up $12 for a locking cap. 'If I'm paying [an awful lot] for gas, I don't want people taking it,' Carroll said. NYPD officials said there is no evidence that gas siphoning is up. But many New Yorkers aren't taking any chances.
'Before, when you'd ask them if they wanted locking or unlocking caps, they'd say locking is too expensive,' said Eddie Bernard, manager of Auto Barn Stores in Brooklyn. 'Now, right away they ask you for locking.'

I just called auto zone to get a cap for my truck. My truck doesn't have an inside release.

I remember hearing that was common during the 70's gas crisis.

I didn't even think of this. When I lived in Queens I think someone tried to siphon gas out of my car. But I was almost running on fumes that day, and they must have been unable to get anything, so they yanked the cap from the little cord. The next day when I went out to the car the cap was on the grass and the little door was open.
