How exactly do they drain them? And why must they be drained..? In other words what does draining them accomplish, I have never heard of it before today.

Re: Spinoff to grooming: anal glands
i think they do it with their fingers?! or possibly a small instrument
when/if your dog scoots that means he needs his anal glands drained. they can leak if they dont get drained. not to mention they can let out a gros 'fishy' smell

Re: Spinoff to grooming: anal glands
they do it with their fingers and what comes out is pretty gross (from what DH tells me). IT doesn't have a smell, but it burns DH eyes and nose when they did it to my dog. She would gnaw at her rear section endlessly and then she started to 'leak' but it wasn't pee.
We took her to the vet and they told us that is what it was.

How often does it need to be done?

We haven't done this to Chewie yet but he needs it done. He leaks some gross smelling fluid at times. We have to bring him to the vet to get it done.

Re: Spinoff to grooming: anal glands
Certain small dogs have this problem. I first found out about it with my lil beagle named tic tac. I thought it was the most disguting thing ever. But, I am now used to it. I tried doing it myself, and I just can't seem to figure just how to do it. I have read so many books, but it is so hard to locate.

Re: Spinoff to grooming: anal glands
I'm not sure why they get full, but we know when Charlie needs to have his 'evacuated' cause he scoots/drags his butt and it stinks! The vet puts some KY on their gloved figure and puts pressure on the glad and removes the fluid - it's usually extremely smelly and not comfy for the dog, but he and we feel better after it's done.

Re: Spinoff to grooming: anal glands
My dog has to have it done every month and a half. Its different for alot of dogs. It's gross..basically, dogs have anal glands that fill up with waste. some dogs empty their own when they poop....if they have a hard stool, the pressure relieves the gland.
Unfortunately, my pooch has a softer stool, so they fill up fast. You'll know when it has to be done, cause they will drag their butts on the floor, or start licking at it (the smell is gross!).
The vet told me she could teach me to do it..I opted NO WAY!
good luck!

Well, thanks for the explanations!! So far Peanut is 11 months and she hasnt scooted or smelled funny just yet. And her poopys are relatively hard so maybe she is taking care of it herself

It's very common in Bostons. We've had more than our share of this 'issue' with all of them

I don't know why, but all this talk about solid poopies and scooting has me giggling. I keep getting images of a little dog scooting along the floor I know it's not funny for the dog, but I can't help laughing!

Re: Spinoff to grooming: anal glands
Is this done more often that it was when we were growing up? FH and I both had dogs our whole lives and this anal thing is new to us. Oscar licks his butt sometimes. Would he be doing in really often if he needed it done??? I always thought that the 'scooting' was just something that some breeds do but some do not. I belong to a dachshund talk group and I have learned that they are not immune to the anal gland problem!!!!! One lady described the process quite vividly!!!!

Oh it smells alright! I have to take ASia to the vet every 6 weeks or so. They did it in the room with me ONCE and never again - lol! They use their fingers and it doesn't hurt the dog at all... Asia doesn't scoot - she licks...and sometimes there is an odor after she goes #2...that's when I know it's time!

Peanuts poop always stinks!! but never like fish so Im guessin shes ok. She never scoots either! She is 11 months old now and I have never had to get the anal thing done. But now that I am more aware of it I'll be sure to make sure Peanuts glands are ok
