Do you think you'll be able to afford a house and children on that income or cutting off your income once you have kids? It's such a scary thought. We can't unless we move in with parents for a few years to save a BIG downpayment.

Well since we don't have the house payments to worry about, affording children won't be a problem. We can afford it even on just half of our income.

Lucky! I wish, I wish. FH is a truck driver who does pretty well for a truck driver, but we are going to have to put A LOT of money on a house to be able to afford mortgage payments and me staying home with kids.

Yeah, if it weren't for the fact that we have a house that is paid for, we would be broke beyond broke, just paying rent. But thanks for FMIL, we don't have to worry about that. She just likes having us there. LOL!

My parents would allow us to take over part of the house, but I just can't do that. I can see her telling me how to raise my kids, making me nuts!

Yeah! The great the house is that it's divided into 3 different apartments and we have the top floor. And FMIL can't climb stairs so.....

We're definitely concerned about money for kids, but when we're ready to have children, we'll find a way to make it work. We can sit back and say we'll have them when we have more money/more financially stable, but the fact of the matter is, it will never seem like 'enough' money. You could always have a little more in the bank or have a job that pays a little better. I know that children=sacrifice and I'm fine with that. My FMIL didn't even know she was having twins until the delivery room and they managed with 2 babies, when they barely had enough money for 1.

Right now our combined income is -$40,000/yr
stupid grad school expenses
Once we graduate, we should be making around $80,000/year if we stay in VA.... about $110,000/year if we somehow manage to get jobs in NY...

Yikes, unexpected twins! That is what my mother says, you sacrafice, and you find a way to make it work. My parents came from Greece with about $600 and had 3 of us in a one bedroom apartment in Cali and managed to save money with just my dad working and moved us to LI and got a house. You find a way to make it work. It just seems so impossible with the costs of things today!

well ladies... I'm 31 yrs old.. I had twin boyz at 18 yrs old, right out of high school... I had no money, no job... My son's father was a security guard ( we are no longer together). So that means we had $0.00 ....
I went to college and now work at MSNBC... Now they r 13 , and in private school.. Where there's a Will , there's a Way...
It's better when ur set finacially, but believe me... Everything will work it's way out...

We can't afford a house or children unless both of us work, scrimp and save. It is depressing knowing that because we live on LI, I won't be able to stay home and raise my own children. But unfortunately that's the story for a lot of couples these days. Even making 150K doesn't make you rich enough to buy an overpriced LI home, pay all the bills and the TAXES, and still save!
