spinoff to ketubah/ceremony question(s)

at what point do you sign the ketubah? before the ceremony or during?

i always thought you do it privately before with the rabbi and two witnesses, but FH said he went to a jewish wedding where they signed it in the middle of the ceremony...

Before the ceremony I thought was more traditional... and in Jewish weddings you are technically already married before the ceremony.

i've met with a few Rabbi's who have all said it was before the wedding (with two witnesses)

It is usually done before. We did ours before the wedding. When my BIL got married they did it during the ceremony it was the first time I saw this done and I was not a fan (sorry to anyone that is). I thought it was always before.

I know traditionally it's before the 'ceremony' but does that take away from the excitement of the whole 'him seeing you for the first time' - thing?

i think jewish people usually see each other before the ceremony...you take pictures together, etc. Do the witnesses have to be men, non relatives? Or can they be women too?

Traditionally they were supposed to be male, non-blood relatives. However, in modern times they can be women too. The biggest requisite is that they are Jewish.

We are having best friends not in the wedding party, I'm having my male best friend and FH is having his female best friend. Its a good way to honor them without being in the bridal party.

It's supposed to be before, but we will do it during the ceremony, since we will not see each other prior.
