Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette
Original post by MrsTC
Check out what happened to me the other morning. I take NJ transit (the railroad) and similiar to LIRR there are 2 seaters on one side and 3 seaters on the other side. I sat down on a 3 seater. There was a lady in the same 3 seater sitting next to the window. Well, at the next stop, these 2 teenagers got on, a boy and a girl. The girl asks to sit next to me (in between the lady and I). So, I got up so she could slide in. The boy then pushes me out of the way and takes my seat! So, basically I got up to let HER in and I got suckered out of my seat. I then realized that the boy was disabled and so I of course didnt mind letting him have a seat - but the girl was fine and said nothing to me - not a sorry, not a thank you, nothing. Since this was rush hour in the morning, most of the seats were taken. A lady was nice enough to make room for me and let me squeeze in her row.
How rude though!

eh, the way i see, the train is a public place, if i wanna talk, i'm gonna talk, as long as it's not screaming and i'm not yelling in someone's face, i see no problem in it
I completely agree. The no talking in the morning 'rule' is stupid. Some people prefer to sleep in the evening too, you know.
The large loud groups are annoying am or pm, but talking, whatever.
What I mean by 'no talking' is be respectful of others- early in the morning the majority of people are either sleeping or reading the paper... talking loudly is sort of rude and obnoxious.. Talking quietly is or course fine...
And the 'no talking rule' at least when I took the LIRR was both ways, AM AND PM... unless it was the bar car (do they still have those?)
I dont know if they have the bar cars, but when I went out to the Hamptons last weekend, they were selling beer and liquor at a little stand on the platform I thought that was pretty amusing....soooooooooo diff from NJ transit!

They have that on LIRR & MNR. You can drinkon the trains but they only have bar cars on trains that go to CT.

One thing that I loved about LIRR that NJT needs to do!
The LIRR, unless they had trouble with one of their trains/lines/etc., would have their trains platform at assigned tracks. Meaning, if I took the 5:33 home, I knew it was always gonna be on track 18.
Half of the NJT/Penn station clusterfart is their main corridor where everyone and their grandmother hold up traffic waiting for their track to be announced.

Over the summer when I was working in Westchester I took the Metro North during rehersals. There was this man with his drum sticks out headphones on just drumming away on the back of the seat. The person sitting across from me and I kept giving each other looks like 'Which one of us is going to say something'. Well, it was me. I finally waved at the man and mimed for him to take off his headphones. He complied. I said 'I'm sorry sir, but your practice drumming is really bothersome to some the rest of us.' I will say that he was very nice about it and said 'Oh really' and stopped, but how could he not know? HELLO!!!! You are not the only person in the world!!!

That's interesting. I had a problem with this on the LIRR. The trains were usual ( my dad has a cheat sheet, in case he takes a differnt train than usual) but the non- regulars & late at night, pretty much everybody would stand in front of that board & wait for the track & stampede to the track when it was posted.
On the Metro North, they post the tracks much earlier, so there is not as much standing around & stampeding. When you see that, you know there is a problem.
They aren't as predictable though, but it is ok, b/c there are monitors everywhere telling you what track , and they are posted early.

I was wondering how to describe what it's like when a track is finally announced on LIRR. It is surely a stampede! Many times, being caught up in one, I say to myself 'why do I feel like just one of the herd?'
