spinoff to NWR TEACHERS. . . help please

Those of you who have been trying to get teaching positions on Long Island, where did you go to school and are they helping you in your search at all??

I will be going to Grad school next fall at either St. John's University or Queens College. I will be getting my Master's in Education to teach English/Language Arts. It was either that or History and I figured my odds were better with English. Eventually I'll probably get certified in both. Anyway, St. John's (far more expensive) says that after their accelerated program I will be able to teach next fall while I finish up my degree and they will help place me. Any experiences, girls? Queens College (much cheaper) has an accelerated program also but will not help place me. Any suggestions as to the best course of action or experiences with either of these schools would be greatly appreciated. I am really nervous after reading the other post. . . help. . .please. . . TIA--jennifer

I went to QC for undergrad and then graduate. Got my teaching degree as an undergrad and felt like they really didnt help place me in a job. I ended up getting hired in the high school that I did my student teaching which was in Ridgewood and then was lucky enough that a co-worker got a job in Nassau and gave my resume to her chair and I got hired in nassau. But i dont think most colleges really help you find a teaching job. IMHO. But I could be wrong. QC wil probably have more connections with city schools but I dont think all the extra money is worth going somewhere else.

Good luck!

Let me tell you something, I don't know any college that has really helped anyone get a job teaching. It's all about who you know, experience, connections, etc. I would go with Queens College. They have a great reputation and you will find something after you graduate. Just think about all those people, like me, who went out of state for school. We didn't have any help from college finding a job yet we're teaching.

As far as the subject area, English is a popular subject and so is social studies but I think if you got your degree in English and special ed. that might help you more than english and social studies. Unfortunately there is a large population of special ed students mainstreamed into regular classes, that's why i suggest the special ed classes too.

If you have anymore questions feel free to FM me. I'm a teacher in bay shore and FH is a teacher in Port Jeff.

FH did his masters at Queens and the red tape was ridiculous throughout his 2 years there. From registration to filing for graduation and meeting with advisors he had a b*tch of a time. I have also heard this from other friends who have gotten their masters there. However, it was very reasonable and not too much work. His masters was in Elementary Ed. I took a few courses in the Counseling Program and I thought the teachers were great, however I also had problems with registration and meeting with personnel at the school.

Overall I do not think that a degree from St. John's would help you that much more than from Queens. When you do your student teaching, try to get placed in a school on Long Island, and make as many connections as you can. Also, try to get a dual certification in English and Special Ed. Social Studies is probably the most saturated area and you will have a really difficult time finding a job with only that.

FH has elem ed cert and English cert and just received his tenure in English, and I teach Spanish and ESL. FM if you have any questions, we are both on Long Island and good luck!

I agree that no college is going to really prepare you for a teaching job. I will tell you that some schools hate student teachers form some colleges and refuse to take them. My school really doesn't like Stonybrook student teachers. Why? I don't know-- supposedly their program isn't intense enough, which is bs b/c I know people who take it and say that it is plenty intense. I went to Adelphi for my undergrad and certification in English Ed. -- I loved the school, but felt so ill-prepared to teach after graduation. I just finished my Masters at Dowling, and also feel like it has done little for me. Truthfully, I learned most from experience and hard work. I t is really just getting your foot in the door. Student teach in a district that will be hiring shortly after you finish. That's what I did and got a job right away. Good Luck in whatever you do!

I went to Post for my Masters in Elem Ed and found it to be a waste of $$$$ and of my time....I cannot find a job so I am going to go back from a dual masters in Literacy and Sp Ed..totally $ucks but what can you do...competition is fierce

BTW...My suggestion is to get a job as a TA while you are in school...this will help you to make connections and gain far more expereince than you will in college

Honestly . . . Never heard of a college getting anyone a teaching job. Go for a college that wont put you in debt!!! Ive been teaching for 3 years and I think the best way to get a job is get hired as a permanent sub or TA. Do an awesome job and hopefully the school district will see how good you are and want to hire you.

I went to QC also. It was cheap but I had way more work than a lot of my friends that went to more expensive schools. Honestly to find a job you gotta know someone or get really lucky. I work in the city and still had to know someone

my college st. joseph's in patchogue does not ehlp you persay...but does set up several fairs and stuff. im graduating this month with 4 certifications in elementary ed and special education. I already have a job in far rockaway and i have yet to graduate. in addition i have gotten several interviews on the island...going on a second for a couple. i have heard the best areas to be in are special ed, social studies and math...i believe. they are shortage areas which will get you a job quicker and make you more desirable. i am sure that is the only reason i have had inertviews is b/c of the special ed. the job in queens (far rockaway) is in special ed and all the interveiws are for special ed. it is very tough and you have to either be willing to sub. or go to the city. you can get into the city quick and it is great experience. also give you resume and to everyone and anyone you can. i just gave mine to my neighbor whose mtoher is a lunch lady in levittown. you never know how you might get an in. i also know the city will pay for your masters if you go for a shortage area.......and you begin teaching right away. ok now that i wrote a book......FM if you want details. HTH!

Social studies is definitely not an area that needs more teachers right now. I work at Stony Brook and spend time working with the teaching cert/placement office, and it seems like science and math are most in need of teachers. I am in a ed. admin. doctoral program with 8 superintendents, and from talking to them it seems like unless you are from an ivy league school (that seems to impress parents) it is more about your interviews and practice lessons or whatever as opposed to where you went to school.

You are all so spectacular for responding with so much advice. . . keep it coming. . . I actually just got my official acceptance to Queens College in the mail today. . So I will definately be going there. . . I am slightly intimidated though because I will be getting married June 24th. . honeymooning from June 25th to July 3rd and then starting QC on July 5th. . . taking two classes(four nights a week) for six weeks while barely seeing my new husband. . . not to mention my daughter. . . and FH children. . . and then it won't get much easier in the fall. . . boy oh boy. . .who knew being an adult could be so difficult a word to the wise: plan your children and life at least to some degree Not that I regret a minute of my life. . . I just keep getting reminded (almost daily) of how much more complicated I made my life by getting distracted at 20. . .

Keep the teaching path info and advice coming. . . it is very encouraging and helpful. Thanks!!

QC is an excellent choice - I got my MA in English there and my administration (SAS and SDA) degree there - both master's for well under 25k.

I have no debt from it and have met a lot of coonnections.

Congrats on getting in.

Advice - pay for the parking permit - it is worth it!
A few friends had their cars broken in on the street.
