Spinoff to Tax Post - Important Reminder to change your status!
Just want to remind you all to check with HR about filling out your new W4 and whatever other forms you might need to do to change your status from single to married... since we will all be married by the end of the year, you can change your status now and get the extra money NOW! I just did this and it will give me a few extra $$$$ before the wedding!

No - you can always verify with HR. But it just depends on your married status by December 31of that year (that is why so many people rush to get married by December 31 because then you claim 'married' for the entire year and you get the whole year's refund, not just one day's worth).
This of course, is not applicable necessarily to medical benefits. Your medical plan may require you to be married before you can share benefits, or you might just have to be domestic partners (FH is already on my work plan because we have lived together for over a year, which is my plan's definition of a domestic partner).

So even though im getting married in July if I claim married status now.. I get a bigger refund?

um..we are filing for 2008 now...you are now reminding us for next years tax filings right? i mean now we arent doing taxes for 2009 which is when we are getting married. and yes...even if you get married on 12.31.09..when you file next year you claim married.

Re: Spinoff to Tax Post - Important Reminder to change your status!
I just spoke to our business office and she said that when you are listed as married they will take less taxes out of your check but it at the end of the year when your taxes are done they will combine both yours and DH's (he will be at the time!!!) income. Depending on how much both of you make it can turn out that you will get money back or you will end of owing. So I think for right now I will just keep it as is and switch over next year or once I'm married. She said you can change what you claim at any time.

its all relative..once you file you will claim married and if you hadnt all year..you will just get a bigger chunk back at the end of the year instead of more in your paycheck each week

Okay, I'm getting confused. Let me see if I understand this correctly as it relates to me:
I'm getting married on 7/11/09. If I went into my school district's accounting office on Monday (and if FH did the same in his district), I can fill out my 2009 W4 form and claim myself as married? This would mean that I'm entitled to receive some extra $$ as they won't take out as much in taxes now in January even though my wedding is in 6 months?

YES EXACTLY!!! I guess its good for those who may need the extra money right away. I myself will wait to claim as married on 2009's taxes & my benefits Medical Vision Dental will change as soon as we are married as my plan states we must do.

I'm confused with this post because our accountant told us that once we file 'married' we will not get back more $$...he said we would have to PAY more bc we dont have enough debt. So we would have to buy a house or a make some type of a large investment to get a nice amount of $$$ in return. Does anyone have advice on this??
