Spinoff to the MBA ?: Did anyone Start college late

Original post by Xelindrya

My one year in college was drama (bah) and ended up with me being in deep depression, debt and zero credits for 32 hours as well as suspended academically for a year.

I went out to the work force and before I knew it I was working hard and paying off bills, school, car, apt, wedding (which didn’t happen) and so forth. I had finally got myself mostly back on my feet when I decided to take a gamble and move to NYC.

So here I am four years later and my company is willing to help me go to college and pick up the costs. So. Where do I begin? I was thinking of going to NYU because I work in the city but if there’s a long island school that has late evening classes and weekend classes that would be better. Also, what about e-schooling. I am just so confused.

Do I have to take tests, does my work experience count, do my professional designations count. Anyone done this??

TIA

PS: being that im not from here, I dont know what schools are good and which ones aren't.

Edited to shorten thread title.

In my experience, SATS are more commonly accepted, although they may expire after 5 years like GREs do. Then again, you may not even need them.

Not necessarily....In NY area, most people take SATs. But in the Midwest and South, most people take the ACT.

If you apply now you may still be able to start in the fall. Or, you can wait until after the wedding and begin in January.

I wish.

I have no choice. It's in my yearly work load/plan.

I am to take at LEAST one college course this year. Otherwise I will be in default of my plan. It's not like I'd be fired, but next year during reviews they check to see if you reached all your planned goals. If you don't they just frown.

Mind you when they planned me to take a class I MENTIONED (more like whined) that I'd be sorta busy with wedding stuff. They thought I should at least take one class because technically there's always an excuse not to go to school. So like it or not Im going to school in the fall. Hence all the questions.

I guess it's good in a way that they're forcing me.

It is definitely possible to start school and plan the wedding. Just take one class a semester. See if you can take an online since your wedding is in the middle of the semester. Take a fluffy class, stay away from quantitative classes like math, finance, accounting, etc...

Good Luck!

Columbia University has a special school for people who are older and want to go back to school. I don't know what the requirements of getting in are, but since they often deal with people wo left school and go back, they probably would be understanding about your situation.
Good Luck!

Columbia's program is great! I think it's called the School of General Studies. It's very well regarded (I work in grad school admissions).

Right, I assumed she is interested in the NY area.

Thank god I took both

We don't need to take both and my ACTs were much higher (when used to get into College) than my SATs.

I still had good enough scores (altho not as good as my beloved parents thought I could get) So I took the ACTs just to be sure.

Hey girl....I haven't been around since my cruise, but I could definitely steer you. I got my Bachelors years after HS (after going to secretarial school & then working & such). I started at Queensborough & got my 2 year business degree & then went to Queens for my Bachelors in Psych and now I have 2 classes left at Hunter to finish up my Masters in Early Childhood. It hasn't been easy, but to be honest, it is kinda nice going to school. Nice to challenge yourself and just learning. Also I know Queens has a program for adults over 25 with nights and weekends. St. Johns' also has a number of online classes, yet you might as well go the city school route and save yourself some $.

Roni, email me with any q's...or post....

Miss ya!
