A trunk show is when a salon features a specific designer on one or more days and they usually have a complete if not an almost complete line in their store. You sometimes get to meet the designer (I met Amsale when I purchased my dress) or you meet with a company rep. Yes there is a huge benefit to going. You usually get a discount.

I went to a Demetrios Trunk Show in Macy's. They had a lot of dresses and I received 15% off. And because I bought my dress during a trunk show, my bridesmaids also receive the 15% off.
