As far as the autism and other disabilities go, I have a theory/opinion (and it is just that).
I think back when we were children there was more shame attached to disabilities and many parents were (and many still are, I assure you) in denial. There was also not as much research and rather bleak futures for these children. BUT NOW with the advent of early intervention programs and special education programs that are here to serve this community of children and adults, diagnoses need to be made in order to give the children with speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and all sorts of counseling services they are entitled to by law at no cost. After years of special education and related services, people with autism can be very productive members of society living independently with jobs.

I agree with leslie about the autism, i think with the incidence of IBS, celiac, crohn's, other gastro disorders, a lot of is has to do with stress level. One of the reasons people get IBS is that their GI tracts are more sensitive to stress, and the stress can cause erratic musculr contractions (diarrhea), and too many muscular contractions can wear out the muscles so they contract really erratically, or not at all, and in the wrong direction (constipation). Every disease has more than one cause, and for most diseases, stress is a huge factor. We have a lot of stress in our lives and less time to deal with/relieve it, so it's affecting us physically.

While I agree that stress doesn't help gastro illnesses it is not the cause of most.
Managing stress helps me feel better sometimes but not always.
Lot's of theories on Crohns around, most docs believe it's autoimmune. I think if that's the case I messed up my immune system early on with the loads of antibiotics that my docs gave me when I was a kid for my ear, throat and tonsil infections. New theories are coming out about it being bacterial and new treatments using antibitoics long term are being tested with some success.
For me, I would stay away from the antibiotics unless totally necessary.
I think that some docs may diagnose IBS and be too general. Some people many have food allergies, be sensitive to inflammatory foods, or have over-active/underactive digestive systems.
