Spoke to my FMIL........

last night, and for some god awful reason, she is hounding, I mean practically harrassing me to wear her UGLY costume jewelry on my wedding day. It's AWFUL LOOKING! I just keep saying, oh, I think my grandmother has jewelry that she's been saving for me for my big day. So, her solution is so sew decals on my dress and hot glue me a veil! HELP! I am happy she wants to help, but it's going to be very scary if I let her!! What are some good ways I can get her involved that don't involve her altering my appearance?

OMG!!!! lol. This is bad. As soon as people here 'wedding' all off a sudden people want to help like it is a charity event.

I know this happend with a co-worker of mine who also had fmil probs. She wanted her to use her fur and she politely told her no. But she also wanted her to borrow her jewelry. Just keep telling her you have something.

Or take the rhinestones and say 'I will see how it looks with the dress' and then return it to her before and tell her that it is really pretty but it took away from the neckline??? Maybe she won't be so hurt if she 'thinks' you tried it.

Or..... maybe ask her to make the money bag or something or help choose a reading???

Sorry I am grasping for straws here....

No, no, any advice is good advice! I just can't stomach the thought of red rose decals being sewn on my wedding dress! She's nuts, like seriously nuts. Nicest woman, but tacky as tacky can be. Her daughter, FSIL, had a last minute wedding when she found out she was prego, and she wore a maternity sailor suit down at town hall, which, hey, is perfect if that is what you want, but FMIL feels like she missed out on stuff because of it. So I want to inclufe her, just not when it comes to my attire! Maybe, ooo, this would be a fun game, I'll cut out tacky picture, and not tacky ones and make her put them into piles, and when she gets one right, I'll giver her a treat! Ok, maybe not...hehe

oh my
just tell her while you appreciate her help
you have different tastes than her and want to pick your own jewelry and such and
while you welcome her advice the final decision has to be yours b/c it is your day

be direct, tell her you already have everything all picked out, then thank her for her ideas. It is your wedding day, wear what you want!

If her jewelry is very important to her, find out why, and try to accomodate (perhaps pin it inside your dress). Maybe you could offer to carry her jewelry in your handbag, that way you have it but you don't have to show it! Oh, and quickly go and buy your veil or tell her that you're wearing your moms. Jeez, this is awful...so sorry.

What I did with my grandmother (who wanted to crochet me a ringbearer's pillow and FG basket!) was order the material and send it to her and ask her if she could sew a ringbearer pillow instead. I've also asked family members to do readings so that they feel involved. You should give her a project that you feel less connected to, such as placecards, and give her the materials to take care of it-that way you give her a 'role' but don't have to wear a hotglued veil.
