st thomas

well after researching tons of info on key west, FL
FH has now desided that he might be willing to get on a plane.

We were going to drive down but it will put way too many miles on our lease, so we were going to fly down to Miami and drive to Key West.

Well for the same price we can go to St. Thomas and stay at Marriott Frenchman's Reef. I spoke to my Sister who used to work for Marriott and has been to this resort. She said that the resort and island is so beautiful BUT she wouldn't recommend going off the resort ground at night. and from what she remembered the bar in the resort closed somewhat early. (but she was there during there off-season)

I know she went there a few years ago so i am hoping that maybe the area has changed a bit. I Want to do beachy things during the day and have a drink in my hand all night but also don't want to risk having my kidneys stolen. Also, my family doesn't have a ransom fund.

Has anyone been there in the past year or so and how is the areas off of the resort property?

We wanted to go to St. Thomas for our Hm too - we are getting married 2 weeks after you. Our travel agent said due to hurricane season we were better off going elsewhere....I have no idea if that is true so we decided on StLucia.

I went there in like 2003 maybe.. it was fine at night. We went off the hotel grounds and into town.. i think there are some shady areas near the port, where the ships come in but we went just off the hotel site, where there were some restaurants and bars with live bands. no prob at all...

No joke...but some of those islands are known to steal kidneys! Why don't you call the resort and find out if they still close early..maybe they don't. I do say you shouldn't wonder around the town at night..maybe you and FH can do OTHER things at night

We were there last summer. Lets just put it this way, you have to be super careful on all the islands once you are off the hotel grounds. St. Thomas is really beautiful and we visited the frenchmans' reef while on our cruise there and it was really beautiful. Not sure about the night life...maybe you should check on an all-inclusive like Atlantis...although, again the surrounding areas there, are not good. I do love St. Thomas....
