Stamps & hand canceling?

Stamps & hand canceling?

I did do a search and I am still confused....

I weighed my invite at the post office and it was exactly 1.5 oz which was $.60. So what so I do now? Buy the $.60 love stamp and when I get my envelopes back stamp each one? Then take them all to the post office to be hand cancelled? They are different things right? The hand canceling is like the postmark?

Sorry, but I must be stressed because I seem to be confused over a seemingly simple task!

Yes, just put the 60 cent stamp on and then bring it to the post office and ask them to hand stamp them. The hand stamp is just post office stamp.

Relax, the stress will get less!!!

Yeah put the 60 cent stamp on the outside. Be sure that the response card has a 37 stamp on it. There are Love stamps in both amounts, though they vary in colors slightly. I put the 37 cent stamps on as I stuffed, then went to the P.O. and put the 60 cent ones on and had them hand canceled. Actually, the guy gave me the stamper thingy and I hand canceled them myself. Have fun! The responses start rolling in soon after!

here you go guys...

Assembling Your Invitation

Enclosures, such as reception cards or directions, should be placed either on top of the invitation or inside the fold. Response cards go under the flap of the response envelope and then over the invitation or inside the fold.

In the past, tissues were used to guard against ink smears. Today’s printing methods don’t require tissue but many continue to use it for aesthetic reasons and for the sake of tradition. If you wish to include tissue, place it over the printing on the invitation.

The invitation is folded and put in the inner envelope (the smaller envelope) with the folded edge down and the front of the invitation facing the back of the envelope. The inner envelope is then placed in the outer envelope with the front of the inner envelope facing the back of the outer envelope

Re: Stamps & hand canceling?

the reason for having them hand cancelled is the following:
( i found this somewhere)

invitations too large for standard sorting machine are transferred to the commercial sorter for 'flats' where large tire tread cancellation markings are used.

Instead of having cancellation marks all over the invite and tire-tread cancellation markings through the Calligraphy, You may ask the clerk at your local Post Office to either hand cancel these envelopes or allow you to use the stamp to hand cancel them yourself. If the Post Office is especially busy at that time, please be considerate and ask if you should return later. If you call ahead, you will be advised of the best way to proceed.

Once hand cancelled, make sure envelopes are placed in a separate tray with a full page note that says, “These Wedding Invitations are already hand cancelled. Please be careful not to place them through cancellation machines.” The Pittsburgh Post Offices have these notes in stock, but to be sure, I would suggest bringing your own note, in bold letters, with similar wording.

The hand canceling is the ink stamp that is found next to the stamp we place on the envelope? Do most people hand cancel their invitations? I never heard of this. Sounds like a good idea. Do you think the people at the post office will get annoyed?

I was also curious as to where the reception directions get placed when stuffing the envelopes. Over or under the response card, or it doesn't matter?

Thanks Marcella, that info was very helpful. I had the same questions. Now it's beginning to make sense.
But I'm still nervous about sending invitations.

Re: Stamps & hand canceling?

FYI...

I went to North Wantagh for my STD...it was busy and they let me hand cancel (they also gave me the fragile stamp to ensure that they would not go through the machine)

for my invites I went to Hicksville...I had them in a box and the clerk took them and put them aside and told me they would do them later...they were hand cancelled and not put through the machine...
