STAR Rebate check?

Oh ok cool, do you guys live in Nassau or Suffolk? I'm wondering if that affects things?

I work for a law firm that specializes in property taxes.....

The state started to mail STAR rebate checks out on 9/29/08. I believe they anticipate that they will all be out by the end of October.

The state is mailing them out county by county alphabetically so Nassau's will be mailed out before Suffolk's.

I think Nassau's mail date was 10/6 and Suffolk's was 10/20 - allow up to 2 weeks after that to get your check.

Thanks so much! We bought our place in Nov of '07 and signed up for the Star program in Feb of this year ('08). Do we qualify to get a check this year, or would it be next year? We signed up and submited our application to the town of brookhaven back in Feb and I have the receipt, but we never heard anything about it after that. So i'm kinda confused how this works?

You probably won't get a check this year

Since you didn't own the house until November '07, you weren't eligible to apply for the STAR program until the 08/09 tax year (which runs from December 1, 2008 through November 30, 2009. Your STAR exemption will start to take effect with the tax bill you receive on or about 12/1/08.

However, if the former owner had a STAR exemption, you MIGHT get a check. Technically, you're not entitled to it since it was the former owner's exemptions but since you paid the taxes for the tax year it is a very small possiblity.

oh darn. I was looking forward to some much needed cash! So would we probably get it around this time then next year?

I know - I would be looking forward to it too if I actually owned a house!

Yes, you should be receiving it next year at this time.

We live in Suffolk, and got ours on Monday!

We moved into our house in Dec. '06, and we received a check last year, so you probably will as well!
