starting a business..

so FH and i were talking over dinner tonight about starting up our own business.. he is in school for culinary arts and loves cooking and stuff.. i love doing things on the computer, graphic design, personalizing things, etc. so we were thinking about starting up a personalizing business.. making lots of stuff like candies, cakes, breads, business cards, address labels, stationary, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc....

what do you all think?

it's pretty tough to start up a business. you'll need to make sure you have enough available cash/credit (don't suggest credit though) for the start up costs most small businesses don't make any money for at least the first year. i would suggest maybe making a few things and seeing if any local shops are interested in carrying what you make, get a feel for the market.

Good luck!!

i would find out info about the small business bureau...they actually give out alot of grants. I even saw a whole news special about how much they do help and how much money they give a year to people wanting to start a small business. But definitely think of a business plan. They want to see that its not a risk, that it is a business that will make a profit...usually have to also try to figure realistically how much you would make in a year, your goal for the business, location and all that

i would say go for it....but start small go to nyc.gov for info on starting a small business...go to a bank and sit with someone on loan info for small business they give great rates.....

if you have the motivation and determination for it then thats great and do it...

you probably want to get some freelance jobs under you belt - this is how most people do it. Once you have some clients then you go and make it legit. Most likely you really don't have major accets to fear being sued over so I wouldn't rush to incorporate.

If your leaning to more graphic design then I recommend the design guilds in NYC to join its hefty price but they support you. I plan to join after the wedding so I can really start my freelance designing.

That is a great thing to do. FH and I always talk about opening up a business. Him and his friends wanted to open up a club/bar/lounge or something of that sort and I push him to open one up. I would love my own club, hehe

I think it is a great idea if you are both truly passionate about it. FH just started his own business....he just does freelance jobs right now and is building clients by word of mouth. But he had to get a lawyer and certain types of bank of accounts. Its a lot of work and commitment but worth it!
