STD Are they really necessary

STD Are they really necessary

Have any of you not used saved the dates? If so do you just plan to send your invitations out earlier? I know it's over a year until our wedding but I am wondering about the benefit of sending it? My friends and family know when the wedding is. Just wondering if it is truly a necessary expense?

I did not send out STD for my wedding. They are helpful if you are having your wedding on a holiday weekend, or when most people are planning vacations.

I did send STDs b/c a lot of people I know plan their vacations early.....i.e. like giant family cruises and stuff they plan like a year in advanced and since my wedding was in August I wanted to make sure everyone planned their vacation plans around it, if they wanted to attend.

On that note however, I do NOT think they are a necessity.

nope not necessary at all-especially if you're not having a lot of OOT guests. I ordered free bus. card size magnets from VistaPrint. I'll see how they look. Don't want to spend a lot of $$ since i really don't need them; but still thought it was a cute idea since SO many friends & family had been asking us when the date was etc.

If you can get an expensive option go for it! You might even find a photographer that includes std's in their packages.

i didn't and i def don't think they're necessary, unless it's a destination wedding. pretty much everyone knows about it anyway. i'm sending my invites out earlier, but only because we want to know how many ppl will be coming.

LOL!

I was surprised how LONG they take to come-i ordered them and they're gonna take 3 weeks for delivery!

If i like them then I'll re-order the other quantities i need. Just couldn't see myself spending $100 on STD. I want to only spend that much on my invites!

STD's are not necessary at all. If you want to send some just to your OOT guests so they are aware a head of time than I would just do that but it's not necessary to send to everyone or to send them at all.

We didn't plan on sending, but then people where asking us 'When's your wedding again?' That includes our bridal party. At that point we decided to send them.

I get that a lot too. I think I am going to have to get them after all.

Re: STD Are they really necessary

I just thought it was a fun thing to do, and I wanted people to actually remember when the wedding is. People do forget, and we are having ours over memorial day weekend. I want to make sure people take the extra day (or two) off work since it's on a Friday. All of FH's family is OOT, and I think only two of our guests actually live within 30min of the hall. I made a magnet since I don't want people to lose it!
And FH still wants to send the invites out early!!

If most of your guests are local and you're not planning on a holiday weekend or Friday or late Sunday (where guests may have to make hotel arrangements or take time from work), then it's not necessary.

We sent ours as we were doing a destination, but wouldn't have if we knew our wedding was going to be local.

That being said, we used VistaPrint and they were so reasonable and easy to do. You can even do a post card for less $$$.

HTH.

I'm not doing them, we have very little out of town guests on our invite list (prob only 5%), and most of our friends/family know what our date is (esp since its splashed all over my Facebook/Twitter accounts).

I think its a great thing to do for large weddings (150+ ppl) but since I won't be having that many guests, I decided against sending them out.

Re: STD Are they really necessary

We sent out STDs because knowing us, we knew we really aren't the type of people to constantly be talking about the wedding with everyone. For our April 2010 wedding, we sent our STDs out in April 2009. Plus it was posted on my facebook page. When we sent out the wedding invites, I can not even tell you how many people said, 'Oh the wedding is on a Friday.' Meanwhile the STD said, Friday, April 23.
No matter what you do people are still going to come up with some reason as to why they didn't pay attention.
