FH & I are so close to booking our hall. Literally now it’s just a matter of us both going down and writing the check (so exciting). But I’m wondering if STD’s are really necessary since we’re not doing anything out of town and we only have a handful of OOT guests? Granted I’m sure I can go on Vista Print or magnet street and get 100 for like $25 if not less; but not sure if it’s absolutely necessary. Just trying to get an idea if everyone is doing it just because it’s another exciting wedding project that can be done right now; or if they’re really necessary.
Also-if we do one; does it HAVE to have our pictures on it?? We have some nice shots of us together; not sure though if I want them as my STD’s and really don’t want to pay for a photo session!

No, they NOT... I am only doing them becuase i am getting married Labor day sunday... But then again, i don't have OOT guest... So maybe for them you can

First off, congrats on almost being ready to book your venue!
Next, in regards to necessity of STDs, I am doing them (granted my entire family is OOT), but I guess you don't have to. It's customary to send them out 10 months or so before the wedding so that guests don't plan trips and things like that and can make sure they set the day aside for you. But ultimately if you'd rather get word out another way that's your decision...there's nothing in the rule book (is there even a rule book ) that says you have to.
Likewise with the photo issue, there's nothing in the rule book that says you have to have a photo on it. We do, but I have gotten plenty (I dare say most) without photos of the couple. The ones I usually get have the couple's name, the general location (i.e. Long Island, NY), the date (duh), and an address to the website with more information. But nowhere is a photo a must.

They are totally no necessary at all. Like you said they are mostly for OOT guests so they are aware of the date.

Yayy, congrats!!
STDs are totally not necessary. I'm doing them because my wedding is a Saturday night in June, which is like prime wedding season so I want my guests to have plenty of time to reserve that date for me! As far as a photo on it, I'm not sure we are going to use one. I don't think they are necessary at all.

No they are not necessary unless you have out of town guests. Personally they were not for us. I think that a person does not have to attend every function that they are invited to, a save the date kind of forces people to come because now it is expected since they know the date months in advance. I know they are the new wedding trend, and a lot of people are making a lot of money off of them, but I really feel they are unnecessary.
I think the exception is for OOT guests, so they have time to make travel plans, but other than that I think they are a no.

They are not necessary however i'm a fan of doing them for 2 reasons.
First it let's people know when your wedding is ahead of time so they can set aside the date and second let's them know way in advance that they have a wedding to go to.
People are very forgetful today, its sad but its true. My FH's best man has asked about a handful of time's already when the wedding is again.
So a little momento for them to stick somewhere to remember wouldn't be such a bad thing. and it def doesn't have to have your picture on it

I second what everyone else said about about whether or not you need them, but if you do decide to do them I def do not think they need to have your picture on them. Our didnt, you can see them in my album if youd like. And congrats on picking a hall/date!!!

they;re totally unnecessary. years ago, no one did them. Do I like the idea? yes, I do. It's a fun way to alert your friends and family that HEY! THERE'S GONNA BE A PARTY!!!!
my Fh has already picked out 3 designs he likes. he wants the 'magnet things' and none have our pic on them. I'm just going to let him do what he wants.
I remember hearing some brides saying you can get them free on vistaprint if you just do the cards.

They are def, not necessary.
I am doing them for a few reasons
1) people keep asking me about the wedding
2) We have a lot of OOT guests
3) it's on a holiday.
You also don't need pics. The ones I've gotten over the years have been 1/2 and 1/2. I did my e-pics early so I could put them on the STD, but they were included. There's no need to pay for an entire shoot based on something people are going to throw out

Not necessary at all. I am only doing them because FH's entire family is coming in from OOT, and many of my friends are scattered about the country. We aren't having our picture on ours. I love my epics, but didn't want one on the STD because we liked it better without it. Your choice!
