I just picked whatever I thought looked prettiest... no one that comes over my house is fancy enough to know the difference between any of those.

Each glass is intended for a different type of wine. You do not need all of them- Pick a basic white wine glass and a basic red wine glass.

I dont know really but the lady at bloomingdales told me that the bigger one is for red wine and the smaller one is for white wine. Who knows if thats right though.

That is so funny - I was looking online last week and my head was spinning because of that very question. I think what you need to do is actually go to the place and look at the size of the glass yourself - one red and one white is fine. I went to Macys and looked in person and it made things much easier - we choose the Vera Wang Duchesse line because I loved the sizes they had and their look - they seemed perfect for what we wanted. THis pic shows from left to right the water glass, red, white and champagne flute. Good luck.

Re: steamware question ...

DH and I registered for everyday glassware from Crate & Barrel which we use regularly (12 white, 12 red, and 12 burgundy plus some martini glasses, highballs, lowballs, etc)

We figured we probably wont use our crystal stemware all too often so we just registered for 12 water goblets and 12 white wine (we thought the size looked better with the height of the water goblets, and the white and red were the same shape in our set). we figured we dont need the champage (are we really going to serve that? if anything, we need 2 and we have our toasting flutes).

it's easy to get caught up in registering for everything but step back for a second and think about what you'd actually have a use for

This is correct! I worked at a winery for years It has to do with the red wine glass having a bigger mouth so you can smell the aroma better before drinking.
