I was just curious how many of you have registered or are registering for lead crystal stemware or more of a regular glass type of stemware. My sister suggested getting regular glass because crystal is simply costly and fragile. What do you think?

Re: Stemware Question (POLL)
I got glass because I know that sooner or later, some will get broken and I didn't want to deal with replacing lead crystal, esp. if it got discontinued. I got really pretty glasses from Crate & Barrel and if I need to replace them, it won't be too expensive to just get a new set.

Re: Stemware Question (POLL)
We registered for glass stemware. Neither FH nor I care for the look of crystal, so we didn't register for any crystal stemware, vases, etc. (much to the chagrin of my mother I might add)

Re: Stemware Question (POLL)
I ended up getting one of the Marquis by Waterford designs - Waterford's lower end. It was more subtle and to be honest, none of the real crystal impressed me that much. I never liked crystal with tons of cuts in it. Too busy for my taste.

I did the same. Being from an Irish family everyone has Waterford. My aunts have gorgeous crystal that's about 50 years old. Unfortunately, even Waterford's higher end crystal is not cut using the same techniques that they used decades ago. I couldn't ask my guests to buy me glasses that were over $125. My aunt has hinted that she might leave me her cut Waterford in a few years but she didn't say anything when I registered for my own pattern.
Similarly to china that you buy today. It's not the same quality that it was decades ago. I have my mom's set (inherited) and the tea cups are so tiny, the flowers painted on them so delicate and intricate. I've been to the Waterford factory and since it's been bought by international owners they are not producing what they used to. Also, it's difficult for them to find younger workers. Waterford glass cutters must apprentice for 10 years!!

Re: Stemware Question (POLL)
I registered for glass and crystal. The stemware is $25 per glass & barware is four for $50. I also have a fear of them breaking..so I didn't want to get a crazy expensive set. Check out Miller Rogaska--I love his designs & its not too expensive if you think you won't get that much use out of the crystal.
