Sterilizing...

Sterilizing...

I just read that you don't need to sterilize the bottles and nipples??? Is this true? They said that all you need to do is wash them in hot, soapy water? The reason I ask is because I have a $45.00 bottle sterilizer that I received from my baby shower, and I haven't opened it yet. If I don't need it, then I can return it and use it towards the breastpump. Any thoughts?

i just throw everything in a pot of boiling water. But I am even starting to slack a little on that. When I have time I do a big sterilizing of everything - bottles, nipples, binkys....but I have washed the bottles in super hot water and gone with that. The binkys I always sterilize because they always wind up on the floor....

I sterilize everything too -- I use my sterilizer quite often.

I used the microwave sterilizer quite often in the beginning, but after a few months, I just started letting the bottles & nipples & binkies go through the dishwasher (I use all Avent). At this point in time, since everything he touches ends up in his mouth, I don't even bother rinsing off the binkies half the time since what difference does it make?? I go around the house collecting at night and run it all through the dishwasher. I think in the beginning it's good to sterilize, but I know that my ped said it wasn't really necessary if you wash everything really really hot....

I got the same sterilizer for my shower. NEVER USED IT!!! I had a nice big pot of boiling water. They say to sterilize the for the first use.

I was wondering this too since I've heard conflicting advice from my friends. Most sterlize with the dishwasher or microwave sterlizer and have not had any problems with their kids, however one girlfriend did not sterlize very well and her daughter got an infection in her mouth. Now she has to take medication for that. I'm just afraid that is going to happen. I have the microwave sterilizer and actually just bought a new dishwasher with the anti-bacterial/sterilizer function. I think between those two and the bottle/nipple brush we'll be ok.

I have the Avent disposable bottle liners, and I sterilize the nipples and pacifiers only. But, I ALWAYS do that. The bottles obviously don't need to be sterilized (disposable liners).
