Storytime! 'Chocolate chip cookies heal all wounds'
On Saturday night, I made an error in judgement. I was very tired after falling asleep on the couch and decided I didn't need to turn the light on in the bedroom as I got undressed.
As I was stepping out of my shorts, I lost my balance and over compensated by bringing my right foot down harder than normal. I also misjudged how close I was standing to the bed. My fourth toe made hard contact with the edge of the bed frame and I immediately saw stars. I'm pretty tough when it comes to pain, but it was so intense, it brought tears to my eyes.
After applying ice to it for 15 minutes, the bruising and swelling had already started. I knew it was possibly broken but I also knew there is nothing you can do for it anyway. So I took 2 Advil and went to bed.
When I woke up, whole toe was dark purple. Gross, I know. It was so swollen I couldn't put shoes on, much less drive.
We had a family BBQ to go to so DH drove and I just went barefoot the whole day. I was successful in avoiding bumping it, I kept it elevated, even iced it a couple of times.
When we got home, I thought I'd just leave my right shoe off to walk across the lawn and into the house. As soon as I put my foot down on the concrete walk, I felt a stabbing pain in the heel of my foot. I didn't think much of it and DH helped me into the house. I waited while he got me a towel to wipe the dirt off my foot before I stepped down on it. That's when we noticed the drops of blood on the carpet.
I already had trouble stepping on the front of my foot because of the toe. Now I couldn't step on the back of my foot because of the cut in my heel. I had the presence of mind, though, to make DH get the Resolve carpet cleaner out of the closet and spray the blood stains immediately. I highly recommend Resolve, you can't even tell where the stains were!
I didn't have to go to work today, thank God, and since DH took the car and I couldn't really walk too well anyway, I spent the day at home. I decided at the very least, I would do the laundry.
While lounging on the couch waiting for the wash to dry, I remembered that I had an extra bag of Nestle's chocolate chips in the kitchen. And a brand new 'Essentials of Baking' cookbook from Williams Sonoma. MmmmMMMMmmmm baking!
I highly recommend this book too, because it told me exactly why my previous attempts at chocolate chip cookies were so dissapointing. I was doing a few things wrong; using hot butter instead of room-temperature butter, greasing the pans too much (now I use parchment paper instead) and not using a baking rack to cool the cookies evenly.
These are easily the BEST chocolate chip cookies I've ever made. But what's better is, in all my time in the kitchen today, along with doing the laundry, I didn't notice that I had stopped limping completely. I was no longer putting most of my weight on my left foot.
My toe was still purple and a bit swollen but I could put weight on it. Then I took the bandaid off my heel - I couldn't even see the cut from last night!
I still can't wear regular shoes but I bet with the right shoes (or slippers!) I could drive.
So, you see, chocolate chip cookies heal all wounds. So go bake some!!![]()
