I don't know why I am even thinking about this but if a dress needs to be shortened, and the bottom has beadwork, how does a seamstress shorten it?????
(mind you I was laying in bed trying to fall asleep when I thought of this and got out of bed to type this post.... moral of story: MY BRAIN IS ON OVERLOAD!)

They take it up at the waist.

Re: strange question ...
really - I was told they could remove the hem with the beading - shorten the dress then re attach the bead work

Re: strange question ...
well I just ordered my dress yesterday & it has tons of work on the bottom...They had to do a custom measurement & the dress is made to my height (you needed your shoes to do this)
Some manufacturers will do this rather then risking the hassle

Re: strange question ...
Mine was measured for me, but I ended up taking out some of the crinoline so it needed to be shortened. They took it up at the waist. Just check the dress at your next fitting to make sure there are no bubbles from where they re-stiched it.

That's what they're doing to mine but it depends on the beadwork - there are times they have to take it up from the waist.

Re: strange question ...
The dress I want has beading on the waist and at the bottom. I think it would cause for difficult alterations.

They did the same with my dress! It's called a hollow hem..but I don't know why...maybe because it's measured from the hollow of your back? or neck? Who knows!

Re: strange question ...
I was wondering the same thing. I am actually ordering a dress that has a lace/beading overlay that is sort of scalloped on teh bottom. It isn't ordered hollow to hem and it will definitely be too long...how will it be able to be shortened? Has anyone else done this?

Re: strange question ...
My dress had beading on top and along the bottom. The train (detachable) had matching beadwork.
They took it up from the waist. Just under the top part the dress was made with a little 'flap' I guess you could call it, so the seamstress could easily 'raise' the hem.
Yes they could just remove and reattach the beadwork at the bottom of my dress, but the dress itself had beadwork too and the hem would get too close to the other stuff in my opinion and then wouldnt exactly match my train, so I had it taken from the waist.
