strapless dress in church

strapless dress in church

My wedding gown is strapless, and my mom keeps telling me that i'm gonna have to wear a shawl or some other kind of covering during the ceremony. I have no cleavage to flaunt or anything, but will it really be inappropriate to wear a strapless gown in a catholic church ceremony? Will I really have to wear something over my dress?? Did anyone else?

I wore a strapless dress and we had a Catholic mass. I think you are ok, so many people wear strapless dresses these days, and like you said-it's not like you'll be flaunting cleavage or anything!

Listen, IMO there are a lot of things you are supposed to do and people don't do them. Do whatever makes you comfortable. If it makes you feel any better I am wearing a strapless in a full blown catholic mass and getting married by a cardinal(FI's great uncle). I had one girl tell me that I cannot go into church without my shoulders covered. Mind you she doesn't even go to church every Sunday but is somehow concerned about the dress code all of the sudden. People are VERY strange !!!

If you are wearing a veil, it may cover your shoulders.

I was married in a catholic church and wore a strapless dress without any king of cover up and it was fine.

I actually asked my priest about this. He said that I should ask my mom she will let me know if its appropriate or not. I told him my mom is a strict irish catholic he laughed and said well than I guess you'll be wearing a wrap no matter what! lol
.......I am wearing a wrap and my dress is spaghetti strap.!
I have been to plenty of weddings where the bride was wearing a strapless dress and no one said that it was inappropriate. I feel as long as everything is in its place and nothings hanging out than go strapless! The chruch isn't as strict as it used to be.
ets: you can always ask your priest

I had the same concerns and I asked my priest because I had heard my particular church was very strict and had a lot of rules. He told me that the church does not tell you how to dress so I can choose to wear whatever I like. My strapless dress is a Maggie Sottero so it comes with a wrap - haven't decided whether or not I will wear it in church, but it's an option. Check with your church and see what they say - if it doesn't matter, wear what you like!

it used to be (back in my moms day) that you had to have your shoulders covered, meaning no spagetti straps, etc....
They have losen up in that time. I am getting married in a Catholic Church with a strapless and this is creating no problem. Your mom probably has the same view as my mom did. I wore a spagetti strapped dress in a wedding and she kept telling me that I would have to wear a shawl, which I didnt and that was in a strict church.

I would definitely check with your priest first, just to be safe. I know that the priest at my church here in San Diego insists on sleeves or a wrap...

Some churches are strict about this and if your church does not require sleeves or your shoulders covered, then you're fine.

Best bet is to ask your priest.
