Stressed about FIL's opinion on our hopefully future home!!

It's a big house in a great area - except they expect to walk into a COMPLETELY FINISHED house - granted, the bones of the house are good - w/ hardwood floors and the kitchen size is just the right size that when we redo it it'll be an EIK...they see it as a 'money pit' and for the amount of money we want to spend on a house - they think it should be like completely redone with new everything. They have not see close to 100 houses like my FH and I have...we know what's out there and this house we really liked and loved the block , area, potential etc.....

I want to tell them that if they want to see us in a finished big house in an excellent area - why don't they lend us $30,000 - c'mon..they are driving me insane!'They would be embarrassed to bring anyone over that house'.

OMG, I am sooooo sorry that you have extra stress.

One thing bothers me...they would be embarrassed to bring anyone to your house? That just sounds a bit weird to me. I am sure many people here would agree that it is better to buy the worst house on the block & fix it up to be your own, then to buy the best house on the block. Not only will you *tweak* a house anyway when you move into it, but this way you will get a quicker ROI.

If the inspector says the house is structurally sound and you & DH like it, then go for it!

Edited b/c I can't spell

excuse me but what right do they have to tell you what home to buy? if you love the home then that is ALL that matters.

First, I say if you & DH LOVE the house and are willing to put the time, energy & $$$ into making it the home that you want it to be the GO FOR IT!!!!! Who cares what anyone else thinks! Do what you want to do!

and in regard to FIL's comments above ......who said you wanted them to bring ANYONE over to YOUR house!!!!!

People who haven't been in the market are clueless. You have seen enough houses to know what you get for the money. Follow your instinct and try not to listen to them.

My parents were the same way. When we first started looking they would come with us and they were appalled at the homes we were seeing. We kept trying to explain to them how RE was on LI and finally after seeing about 20+ houses with us my mother understood. My dad never got it, though. But we ended up getting a great house in E. Northport. It needs tons of updating but it has SO much potential. Go with your gut and do what you want. You guys are the ones that have to live there.

I know EXACTLY what you are going through....I have had the same encounter with FIL's...It seems like nothing is 'good' enough for them....I came right out & told them prior, this is OUR home & we are not looking for your approval..Be happy for us & have confidence in us...

For what real estate is going for, houses that are worht over $500K are still in horrible conditions...Don't let their comments get to you...This is something that your FH & you are doin & if you FIL's don't like it, tell them they don't have to come to visit

Re: Stressed about FIL's opinion on our hopefully future home!!

I saw so many houses that were 'finished', but to the sellers standards and taste. The realors siad to me stuff like,'this kitchen was completly redone' and I sid right back to them, 'yeh, but it would get ripped out if I bought it because I don't like it at all!'

You want the house to be your taste. it isn't fun to just walk into a finnishe house that is done to someone else's taste!

Our home needs new everything, but at least it is livable the way it is; new appliences, etc. We will make it our own little by litle.

If you want the house, get the house, don't listen to anyone but yourselves!

I'd go for it. If you and your FH love it, thats all that matters. I'm sorry that your FIL's are giving you grief though! My grandma actually did the same to my Mom when she bought her house (where she still lives) in the 70s. It had dark wood paneling and avacado green everything (it was the 70s ) and my grandma hated it and said she'd never visit. It upset my mom a lot, but very quickly they fixed it up and my grandma loved it. Now she thinks its the best house ever. Your ILs will come around...eventually!

Rome wasn't built in a day

Yeah but remember that God created the earth in six days. You should remind her of this.

Um....what?!? Way to be supportive!

I'm sure that you are way more attuned than they are to the curent market in the area you're looking, and unless they are good at pointing out potential pitfalls that you may not notice (structural problems, location or property issues, etc.), then it sounds to me like you really should avoid their input on potential purchases! As for fixer-uppers vs. 'done' homes, everyone in the world (well, except your in-laws apparently) will tell you that you'll almost always get more return on a home in which you're willing to invest your sweat equity, than one for which you're paying for the work that the previous owners have already done!

I am so sorry you have to go through this!!!!

My FIL also had his comments but it was why don't you put more money down. I'm sorry we don't have any extra money lying around.

Thank you everyone for your support and for making me laugh ('who said anything about bring people You know into MY house') lol....

I appreciate it - and I'm sure in the end - they'll be happy we made this choice.

Hell, a few years ago they were going to buy a house in their area for like $250,000 and now it's worth over $700,000 and they regret it everyday.
I gotta go w/ gut feeling...so I'll keep you posted w/ my progress.

Thanks again !!!

If you like, then buy it. They don't have to live in it, it's YOUR home. Don't forget, they don't realize the market nowadays and they are used to being able to hold out for something better.
