Strokes.....

Received this email today in the mail... again I dont know if theres truth to it but if it can help save a persons life you darn right im forwarding it to my girlies.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK . to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
(Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

{NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue... if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke}

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Re: Strokes.....

This is a very informative post. Alot of people might see this and think you are talking about elderly parents or grandparents. What many people dont know is strokes have no age limit. Some people dont know the signs of people who are having a stroke. I have a friend whose best friend's Mom had MS, she passed away. I saw her Mom have a stroke once her speech got slurred and her face was slanted. The Friend immediatley called 911. At the hospital they said she had a mini stroke. Has she not called 911, she could have died that night.

All of us ladies should be aware of this along with heart disease and blood clots too. Some BC's can cause blood clots to be worse especially if you have a family history of the disease. Im not sure if strokes are an inherited disease, though the above mentioned lady's 2 aunts had strokes as well.

Re: Strokes.....

This is a true test. We use this on the ambulance to check patients. This is very important. The faster you get to a stroke hospital the faster they can help you.

Re: Strokes.....

Hey everyone,
I'm one month away from graduating from med school and just wanted to give you the low down on what they say about strokes. The signs are true, in addition to others such as difficulty with any motor tasks, blindness ect.... However, early treatment DOES NOT necessarily mean that you cant reverse the effects of the stroke. Early treatment is usally important to prevent further damage to the brain or to prevent recurrent strokes. I just wanted to clear that up so that you're not misinformed. I didn't want anyone thinking that if only they got their loved to the hospital earlier that they would be cured, cause that is false.
