Anyone live in the Stroudburg, PA area? We went out there this past weekend to check it out. There is affordable housing there and FH can still work in NYC which is nice but we are not quite sure how we feel about the area yet. Is there any info anyone can provide? Thanks.

Re: Stroudsburg, PA?
Check out the schools before you do anything. Fh and I were going build in the Stroudsburg area and decided not to after we saw the schools. Also something to consider, the commute to NYC is a long one by bus... and subject to road closures in snowy weather.

I spent my childhood there- I would never move there- for a summer house fine, but never full time. The schools aren't great, the commute is WAY too long and there is no where to eat :)

Thanks for your help!
How do you know the schools are bad? Where can I find out more info on that? I had a feeling that would be a problem. Something about the place bothered me a little but I can't figure out what!

We actually went to the schools. Then we looked at the reports our RE agent supplied us with. We were able to talk to would-be neighbors too, that was the biggest help in making our decision.

Hi...can't help you with Stroudsberg, but I recently moved to Bethlehem, PA...it's in the Lehigh Valley...45 minutes south of Stroudsburg.
If you're considering PA...why not consider Bethlehem. The schools are EXCELLENT and you can verify that online and with any realtor. We bought an older home in a more established area, but there are so many newer houses being constructed.
On Route 33 they are in the process of developing an upscale mall to include Saks and the like...although there is PLENTY of shopping currently available...Lehigh Valley Mall and many other strip malls that include Lowe's, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, Pier 1, Old Navy, etc, etc, etc...
The area is terrific...our commute to lower Manhattan is between 1:45 and 2:00 hours...which is not that much off from some people's commute to Manhattan from LI.
There is sooooooooooooooooo much to do in Bethlehem, lots of great restaurants too!!!
Bethlehem has seen a recent surge of transplants from the NJ/NY area...it's amazing!!!!
FM me if you'd like more information!!!!

Re: Stroudsburg, PA?
I went to ESU (East Stroudsburg University), so I am very familiar with the area. The town of Stroudsburg is cute, and the area has developed so much over the past few years because of the NY'ers moving out there. I graduated in 97 and recently went back to visit and couldn't believe how much it had changed. There were more restaurants, more traffic, and more houses! I personally LOVE the Poconos and miss it terribly. I try to convince DH to move there but he thinks I'm crazy when I say our commute to NYC from the north fork of LI will be as bad as it would be from Stroudsburg. Stroudsburg schools do not compare to most LI schools, but I wouldn't consider them terrible. I'm sure you can find ratings online. It's so tempting to move there when you see how much you can get for your money!

Re: Stroudsburg, PA?
My dh lived in stroudburg for about 8 years before moving back to ny. Although, he liked it when he first moved there, a lot has changed. We still go there a lot to visit friends and his sister is still in the area but the schools there are as some others have said..not the greatest. My niece just recently told me, at the end of the school year some things that go on in her elementary school and I was shocked!
Some parts of the area are very quaint and nice while other parts have gotten worse over the years. My dh's best friend still lives there and he told us that there have been 5 shootings in his neighborhood alone this past year. We were thinking of buying a summer home there but after hearing that, we have changed our minds. It is nice to visit because anything is a change from the city but to live there..I would say try looking somewhere else. JMHO

There was actually just a big article in the NYTimes about the area- how a lot of people from lower income brackets are moving there & getting taken advantage of- they get a mortgage and #1 can't afford it and #2 the homes don't have things like insulation... so there's a lot of foreclosures.

The builder we were going to use told something similar about another builder in the area. The builder would advertise in low income neighborhoods, do a haphazard job on the homes and then buy them back when they went into foreclosure just to sell them again to another low income family. You really have to be careful these days.

Re: Stroudsburg, PA?
What's up with the schools there? So depressing! I used to go to Stroudsburg Elementary to teach the little kids about the rainforest and they were all so cute! (Not like being in a bad school makes them any less cute, but you know what I mean...) I did notice how much more congested it was there, and built up, but I had no idea that the school system was getting worse. I do know there was one shady area of Stroudsburg, huge druggy section, but other than that, I always felt so safe there.
