I am so upset, I feel like I can't get it together with my banking. My stupid doctor held a copay check for 2 weeks, and I thought it had cleared already. And my checking was low. So his check hit the account yesterday, and I was short like 6 bucks, and they charged me a $30 overdraft fee. My paycheck was direct deposited this morning, and I have a savings account there. I called customer service to see if it was a mistake, because I thought I was protected up to $500 for overdraft, and because my savings account could have covered it. And she said that I didn't have the accounts linked, and that there is always a fee for overdraft, and that they won't take away the charge. I know it's only $30, but I feel like such an idiot, and I am really upset that I can't manage my check book.

Re: stupid overdraft fee
I got HUNDREDS of dollars behind last summer that same way! I thought I had the $$ for doctor's copays, anbd I was going really frequently so they added up, and then I got so behind b/c it was every copay PLUS a $30 fee for each. it was awful. I feel your pain. Try to talk to the bank manager. They really want to keep your account and they may be able to help you.

Re: stupid overdraft fee
it's so frustrating. I used to bank with Chase, and they didn't charge for overdraft. But their monthly fees stunk, so I switched to washington mutual, mostly because they were open later, and the service fee was cheaper. The customer service woman told me to apply for a line of credit, and that would cover me...but it has interest attached....I don't know.

well..to the last post..if you have overdraft..and acutally use it, just make sure you pay it back quick. intrest on overdraft is usally higher then typical credit cards. having a saftey net is more important then a higher rate. i used mine rarely...

I would go to the branch and demand to know what your savings and checking aren't linked. That is something that they should do automatically! Over the phone, you aren't going to have much luck getting them to reverse the charge, but in person, you probably will be able to get it credited back.

Actually, I requested that they NOT link my checking and savings, but they should have at least asked you about it when you opened the account.
The best way to avoid the charges is to balance your checkbook every month and only go by the balance you have in the checkbook, not what is on the ATM slips.

Sounds like Citibank...they stink and I've been a customer of theirs for 20 years. I need to get another bank.

Re: stupid overdraft fee
I closed accounts with several of the big banks and went to the smaller ones. But, with the big banks, you are paying for the convenience and the 24 hr service.
When my ATM card was stolen, I had to search my house and records to find the # to call to report it, where if I still had the big bank accounts, I could have quickly found it on the website.
Then, recently, a large bank took over my smaller bank, so now I have the account with the larger bank, like it or not. They are all annoying in one way or another

I went through this too! Except it was two charges since my credit card company mistakenly took two payments from my online payment. Even though the credit card company refunded my money, the bank refused too!

Re: stupid overdraft fee
I hate them all...I switched from Chase to Washington Mutual. Grrrrr. I don't know....it's my own fault for not correctly balancing my checkbook....but a $30 fee seems really high
