Here is a stupid question - I always thought that a ranch was a one story house - no upstairs. Now I'm looking on Mlsli and some of the houses advertised as ranches seem to have an upstairs,... what's the story?

i think those are usually called high ranches... where's it's not a full flight of stairs to the main floor. I may be wrong, but i think that's probably what it is...

There is also the split-ranch or'splanch' which also has a few steps up and a few steps down to another level- it's something like that

An expanded ranch can also have an upstairs.

also,
if the 'hi ranch' is half buried, they're often called ranches (with a basement).
