Stupid Question...What is a grooms cake?

Re: Stupid Question...What is a grooms cake?

As fa as I know the grooms cake is Southern tradition. My friends have been doing groom's cakes that reflect somehing that the groom is interested in. An example is a cake made in his fraternity colors. The following was taken from http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/cake_decorating/34011

Having its roots in Southern tradition, the groom’s cake has been around for quite some time and is making a fashionable comeback on the wedding scene.
Traditionally, a groom’s cake was sliced and boxed for the unmarried girls attending the wedding to take home and place under their pillows in hopes that the man they dreamed of would be their future husband. Groom’s Cake has come along way since then. Today the cake is meant to be a reflection of the groom’s interests, whether it be one of his hobbies, favorite sport, alma mater, profession, etc..

It’s a personal choice when to serve the cake - either at the rehearsal dinner, as an alternate dessert with the wedding cake, or as a late night dessert for the wedding party. Just because primarily groom cakes tend to be a fruit cake or a chocolate cake shouldn’t dictate what the bride and groom should have. Obviously being named “Groom’s Cake” it should be a flavor and theme that the groom enjoys.

We both have southern parents and they are expecting a groom's cake. I am not going to spend a lot of money on this addditional cake.

It's not a stupid question. The groom's cake has been mostly a southern tradition that is now becoming more popular elsewehere. It's a cake for the groom usually served at the RD or the wedding. Often it's chocholate and can be in the shape of your FH hobby or something like that. We did one at our wedding and it was a cake with the Univeristy of Florida Mascot -- the gator -- since we both went to school there.

I surprised my Husband with one at our RD. It was decorated as a Rugby Field with his old team colors. He loved it.

Are there any bakeries in Suffolk County that do this sort of thing? I would like to surprise my fiance with a Notre Dame grooms cake.

We are having a groom's cake, courtesy of my mom Since my FI and I are from the Caribbean we are having a Caribbean cake, this cake is usually termed the black cake, the rum cake or the fruit cake, which is not usually served at the wedding it is boxed and taken home to be enjoyed. Due to the richness of this cake, it is usually served in small portions.

Happy planning

There is never such a thing as a stupid question. We all learn from all the questions asked here

Most bakeries should do it. It's just a special occassion cake like you would ask for b-day party or something. I know Create a Cake will do it. They were too expensive for me. I had mine done at the ROlling Pin in Setauket but it was a round Bailey's Chocolate cake with just the logo designed on top. They wouldn't do a shaped cake for me. But this kept my costs down. And the cake was yummy!
