Are you NYS certified? I know a lot of districts are only accepting substitue teachers if they are certified...for my school district you have to apply individually...Im not sure if you can go through boces or something though...check that out!

Thanks! I didnt think you had to be certified to subsititute. I am going to persue my degree. I have an interview with the NY Fellows next week but I want to have a backup plan just in case.

just apply to schools....all schools are in desperate need of subs...some schools don't require NY state certification others do.... but some other states are honored under requirements.

I would just send my resume in with it saying certification in progress or pending...and see what happens...what have you got to lose?

Re: Substitute teaching???

i know that with the district i'm student teaching in, you get 45 days of un-certified subbing allowed... you need to go to the district office and fill out paperwork

i dont know about any other districts though. sorry!

If you're applying for the teaching fellows then you must not mind driving into the city (one of the boroughs). It's fairly simple to get certified as a sub for the nyc department of ed. I'm sure you can find instructions on their website boe website
Last I heard subs get around $140 a day subbing in the city. Not too bad if you ask me!

Get yourself on www.olasjobs.org/longisland....you fill out a generic resume, upload your certifications, fingerprinting, letters of recommendation, and all that stuff and you can apply online to school... you type in reading teacher in the search and it shows you all the schools looking for that position... it is free...a little time consuming to fill out but once its done it is saved and you don't have to do it again.

Re: Substitute teaching???

if you are certified or going for your certification you can sub.

I would send your resume to different districts and on your cover letter write that you are interested in a substiute teaching postion.

to be a sub most schools DO NOT require you to have to apply online paper resume is okay

that's true, but most districts with those restrictions will allow you to sub your little heart out if you are taking courses for a teaching program.
