Substitute teaching question

Substitute teaching question

I have a full time teaching position now in a private school but I would like to teach in public school so I might start subbing in September.
My question is do all schools call subs in September? I don't think city schools do, I don't know about Nassau county though. I don't want to resign and then not have an income at all.

In my school a girl was out in Sept and I am pretty sure they called a sub for her...but I think it was towards the very end

I would start applying for a regular position as well as a permanent sub position if you want to make sure you have some sort of income...

Thanks girls, I apply weekly on the OLAS system. I've sent my resume to dozens of city shools and they keep calling me to sub! I'm taking it as a sign that that's the best way to get a job but I'm waiting until Sept so I can have FH's medical coverage

we def call in subs because we have to go to a lot of meeting in sept///

Re: Substitute teaching question

I would try for a permanent sub position. Those are guaranteed work every day and usually lead to more permanent positions! Good luck!

Re: Substitute teaching question

some districts call the subs in every day.

when i subbed I was one of the ones that were called every day and if you develop a good relationship with someone at the sub service they will call you every day and sometimes even tell you in advance

Re: Substitute teaching question

are you looking to sub only in the city or do you want to work on LI?
Def start applying now. also some advice, send your resume to building principals not only district offices. the principals know their needs and in most districts, the interviewing starts at the building level.

I'll work either in the city or Long Island. I don't really have a preference. Thanks for the advice about sending resumes to principals, I'll do that.

City schools don't start hiring subs until October. NYC does have hiring halls in the spring each year where principals go to interview prospective teachers. Go the Dept. of Ed website to try and check it out when they post the dates.
