SUFFOLK COUNTY GIRLS please help!!!! (or if you know about suffolk county towns)
so FH and i are pretty much about to close on a house in bayshore.... school district is west islip, but the house is technically in bayshore.
so of course my mother is flipping out!!! first off, she never wanted us to be looking for a house until after the wedding so she is already pissed about that. so i was dreading telling her that we are close to closing on this house (she didnt even know that we went to look at the house) and she FLIPPED OUT over the fact that it is in bayshore - even though i tried to tell her that it is like borderline bayshore with west islip school district she is seriously not making this at all enjoyable!!!
so my question is - what really is the deal with bayshore? is it really a horrible area?! please give me honest answers!!
TIA !!!

The area of Bayshore that is in the West Islip school district is totally fine. Yes, there are questionable areas of Bayshore but there are also some very upscale neighborhoods. Where you are looking is a straight up, middle class, working class neighborhood. West Islip school district is very good also.

I would not offer that advice. The market is very volitile, especially in Sufflok. Houses all over the south shore from Babylon to Brightwaters are selling for as much as 25% less than what they were valued at a year ago. My neighbor originally paid $450K for their house, and tried to flip it. They re-did the entire house and still only got $310K for it, even though it was listed originally at fair market value at $490K. Definitelty also ask your RA to see the sale price trend in that area.
Drive by several times at all different times of day & night. If you see any cause for concern see if there are any police reports available for that part of the neighborhood.

I honestly am not sure what happened with your neighbor -- however-- my father is an investor-- he flips houses and buildings for a living and so on and so forth--- I dont need to explain in depth however-- the a real estate investment is the best one to make-- & my advise still stands-- pluss I am sure you know enough about the area now to be more positive

I live in Deer Park which is only like 10 mins from Bay Shore and Bay Shore def has its 'questionable' areas. But, if you're on the border if Islip you should be fine. Just try to stay away from Bay Shore bordering Central Islip.

I live in West Islip not too far from Bayshore. I love it here! The school district is supposed to be great (I don't have kids yet), the library is wonderful, my neighbors are very pleasant to live near, my block is quiet and peaceful, Babylon Village is 4 minutes away for restaurants and nightlife, we're less than 10 minutes from Robert Moses beach.. what more could you ask for?
Parts of Bayshore aren't so nice so people tend to stiffen a bit at any mention of the word 'Bayshore,' but as long as your block is nice, and you know the school district is awesome... I don't see a problem.

FH teaches in Bay Shore High School. He loves it. The student body is really diverse, both economically and racially/ethnically, and it works. Parts of the town (by the train) may look a little shady. Other parts are gorgeous. The town's cleaned up a lot in the past decade or so, and it's booming now. (The HS's enrollment has increased by several hundred stdents in the past five years). The village area is great, lots of shopping and resturants. Lots of town festivals so you've got that 'small town' feel. We'd have moved there if I didn't work in Queens. And West Islip SD has a great rep. I'm sure the house is great, so good luck and congrats!

FH family lives in Bayshore and West Islip and both are in the nice middle & upscale parts.
Plenty of towns have 'good' and 'bad' parts - just learn which they are so you know where to be more careful when your driving, shopping etc.
Bayshore just happens to be one of those towns that goes to both extremes
Good luck

My car pool buddy lives north of SS Parkway, Bay Shore zip and WI schools. They picked it because of their daughter and the WI schools. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

i grew up in bay shore and loved it. to be honest it has a bad reputation mostly because of it's mixed population. yes it does have it's not so nice areas, but so does every town. it also has it's gorgeous mansions by the water. the high school is amazing and is/was rated one of the top 100 in the country for music, has some of the best sport teams (esp girls softball), and offers some really unique programs (like ethnic pen, etc.). i LOVE it and never wanted to grow up anywhere else. as for WI schools, my friend (who graduated from bay shore) works there. i'll fm you about that because it may raise some controversy here....

So FH is from Bay Shore and we are looking in that area too. As long as you have West Islip school district you are fine. Bay Shore is very nice. Near the beach, ferries etc. I'm excited about moving out there.

I grew up in Bay Shore and went to Islip schools. There are many parts of Bay Shore which are very nice and expensive. I grew up south of montauk which is considered the nice part of Bay Shore. Mind you there are not so nice areas of Bay Shore as well just like any other town. As long as you are not in North Bay Shore/Brentwood area you are fine IMO. Sometimes Bay Shore gets a bad rap
