I am not familiar with Suffolk county and wanted a little more info about certain places. Can you give me your thoughts about the following areas:

1. Central Islip
2. Islandia
3. East Islip
4. Brentwood
5. West Islip
6. Babylon
7. Wyandanch

Thanks!!!

My favorites on the list are Babylon + West Islip. They are also right next to each other

NO brentwood or Wyandanch!!! Stay away from Central Islip as well....Islandia is just an incorporated village within Central Islip

Babylon is nice but has some not so nice areas....try to stick with babylon village

I know nothing about any of these areas EXCEPT the Newsday school report came out a few weeks ago and I was skimming the list looking for what schools stood out as great or horrid and by far, the worst was Wyandanch. It had a horrible rating.

Re: Suffolk County Neighborhood

Thank you so much! We are planning on looking for a house in Suffolk and I have no clue where to start. Maybe you can give me some ideas where to look- the only thing is I work in the city and I don't want to commute more than 1 1/2 each way. Any ideas are welcome

Nassau is too much $$$$ right now so we're looking further east.

I live in lindenhurst. the train is an hour exactly (express) the parking isnt too bad, the neighborhood is nice and safe (stay out of North lindy though)

Ronkonkoma is farther out but it runs many express trains which make it I think about an hour and 10 minutes! But its a BIG stations so parking can be a pain. Of course this is the train I will be taking when I move!

On the northshore anything east of huntington is out b/c its diesel train so you have to change and its slower.

Good Luck!

I used to commute from Ronkonkoma, it is great if you work 8 to 5 or similiar hours. If you work late or overtime a lot, the express trains become limited after 6:30. The best train from Penn to Ronkonkoma is the 5:41, after that all other trains take at least 1 hr. 20 minutes. Parking isn't all that bad, they have a garage, but there is a waiting list to get in. The x-tra $$ for the lot is so worth it because even if it snows once during the year the fact that you don't have to get out and brush your car after a long day and commute is great.

I would suggest looking at the LIRR website and checking the train schedules for the towns your are considering to see if it is possible to keep your commute reasonable.

I agree I would steer clear frokm Wyandanch and Central Islip.
They are also high gang areas.

I live in West Islip, and have all my life. It is a very nice area and the shcools are one of the best in Suffolk County. But the school taxes are very high.

We live in Ronkonkoma and it is a nice town to live in . Not too upper class-- not too lower class -- solidly middle class.. which I like. The schools are very good.. and it is a central location to everything.

I would steer clear of Central Islip and Wyndanch !!!!

south huntington, east northport, greenlawn are also nice. and near everything! the schools are good, crime is low, and no matter where you are in suffolk, you're never more than 15 minutes away from water. that i love

Avoid Central Islip and Wyandanch (and most of Brentwood). Parts of Islandia border CI and are not too good...EI is nice, as is WI!

Re: Suffolk County Neighborhood

are there any good suffolk towns to recommend which are low priced with school starting to become better(meaning the prices will rise up later)....

Brentwood has good and bad areas. W. Islip the same. I found N. Babylon to be resonably priced and the schools are exellent. Myself as well as 3 other couples I know just purchased in N. Babylon and we all are very satisfied. I love it. It is convenient to all. Look for something off Deer Park Ave. near S. State Pkwy. Good Luck and Best Wishes.

I live in West Islip and my brother lives in Babylon village. Both very nice and you can find affordable houses (there are two for sale by me). It's also good for commuting because the Babylon LIRR station is a main stop - lots of trains, many express trains. I think the WI schools are better than Babylon, but the school taxes are a little high. Overall, my taxes aren't too bad though.
