Suffolk County Questions?

Suffolk County Questions?

I have lived in Ronkonkoma for a couple years now -- I like my area -- but I was wondering -- I am from NJ and know very little about LI... How is Ronkonkoma perceived by the people on the Island? Is it nice -- Ok -- old -- crappy ? Be honest ....
I know this sounds stupid -- but someone made a remark to me -- it was hurtful -- and I just was curious, Thanks-

Ronkonkoma is a nice area!!

Like all towns on LI..EVERYONE has an opinon about how a town is. What you need to do is to visit the town at different times of the day, go to the local stores, look at the schools!!

Best of Luck to you!!

Re: Suffolk County Questions?

My brother and SIL moved to Ronkonkoma 4 years ago and now FH and I are looking in that area to move too!
I dont think I have ever heard anything bad or negative about Ronkonkoma to be honest! Whats nice about it is first the location to the LIE and LIRR. Also its part of Sachem SD which even though its HUGE is a pretty good school! And to be honest, one of the reasons that we are looking out there is because prices there are pretty reasonable so you get more for your money out there then more west!

ETA, you cant take any comments to heart! My FI grew up in Kings Park, I grew up in Lindenhurst! We are constantly teasing one another about where the other grew up. Everyone who has grown up on LI has a joke or comment about just about every other town....

thanks -- I guess I am sensitive because I love my house -- and did not like someone saying the area I choose to live in was not very nice -- I think it very nice!!

Elle-Ronkonkoma is a nice neighborhood-we looked at two houses there last week. People always have something to say about every town. Parts of Ronkonkoma are a little industrial & not as well kept but you find that in all big towns near the LIE & the LIRR. Its a working class neighboorhood & I think that's a good thing.
A lot of Ronkonkoma is in Connetquot School District too-same as where we live now Oakdale-that's why we'd like to buy something bigger in that area.

I grew up in Ronkonkoma and like richsbride said, someone always has something to say about everytown! Its a good area to live in - some neighborhoods are newer/updated more than others -- and the other school district is Sachem which is more down towards the Lake.

Elle, is it possible that whomever made the comment to you was confusing your location with Lake Ronkonkoma? I am not super familiar with the area, b/c I just moved to Suffolk this year, but I've always heard negative things about the Lake Ronkonkoma area - NOT Ronkonkoma.

Ronkonkoma is a great town. People have something to say about every town. As long as your happy that is all that counts. I grew up and lived in Lake Ronkonkoma for 25 years and loved it. Yes there are run down parts (by the lake and such) but there are also new developments and the school districts are good.

Enjoy your home and don't worry about what other people say

I have always lived in Suffolk County but wasn't too familiar with Ronkonkoma until a few years ago. There are lots of nice neighborhoods there. It seems like a community in which many young people are gravitating towards - affordable, good location, etc. I haven't heard anything negative about Ronkonkoma at all -
Maybe the person who made that remark to you was jealous!

I live in Ronkonkoma. I grew up in West Babylon, DH grew up in MA. Ronkonkoma is pretty big so there are lots of neighborhoods. I assume some are nicer than others- like ALL places throughtout the country. they are building a new high school (aka higher taxes) so I am sure that will be nice to have. I like my neighborhood. It is a family place with lots of kids around. I am close to the LIRR (which I need) and the LIE (makes it easy to get around).

Elle,

I think I might live near you. We are in Ronkonkoma too, off Motor Parkway. We are in a great area, we are in Connequot schools, and our little area borders, Nesconset, Hauppauge and Smithtown.

have any of you Ronkonkoma ladies ever called 777-FILM? I hear there was a big uproar that the guy would say Ron Kon Koma (like coma)(not sure if you can understand from spelling out...but put emphasis on every syllable)

wonder if he still does...

Re: Suffolk County Questions?

I heard the same thing from my MIL no less. My DH is from Massapequa. So when she heard we bought a house in (Babylon), she was like is that an ok area, Suffolk County??? Like, in other words, I wouldn't live in Suffolk...

Becuase its cheaper, I think people are under the impression that it has a lower class of people. Not true, at all. But I think that is the impression SOME people in Nassau and the City have. Some people say Bum **** Long Island (meaning out East). Oh well. Suffolk is beautiful and was in better shape financially then Nassau. Now, who knows.....
