Suggestions on bringing pets together

I have a 4 yr. old cat who has always been my baby. My FH has a 5 yr. old miniature pinscher who is adorable but crazy as anything! They met once and my cat's fur was flying everywhere. I am a little apprehensive about having these two little guys live together but giving them away is not an option.

I always grew up with dogs and cats together and it always worked out fine b/c the dogs were big and gentle but this little guy is pretty hyper and both are set in their ways. Any suggestions?

This site is so helpful, by the way!

i would let them each sleep with a t-shirt or something and then give the item to the other animal to get used to their scents, also have BRIEF visits with them, eventually they will get along or learn to ignore each other, but it will work out

In my experience it is a lot easier with little dogs because they are not AS intimidating to the cats. I just moved them all in and in a few hours it was like no big deal. Above poster had some good suggestions but I wouldn't worry too much.

keep one in one room and one in another or in cages next to each other so they can get used to each other's smells, looks, etc. slowly introduce them to each other and give both of them lots of attention. and make sure to give each of them (esp the cat) a safe place to retreat to. that's always how we did it and it's worked out fine so far.

Here's a helpful link from www.thecatsite.com: Introducing Cats to Dogs

I used the following link to introduce the kitten FH bought me to my HUGE 8 year old cat: Cats

I kept them apart for 1 month! They're like bro and sis now! Be patient...Good Luck
