hello. i am taking multicultural counseling as part of my school counseling grad program. one of the class requirements is that i have to 'immerse myself in a culture' or 'experience what it is to be part of another culture'. for example, go to a gay bar; pretend to be in a interracial relationship in public and record the reactions of others; attend a religious event of a religion that drastically differs from mine.
does anyone have any creative suggetions for me??? keep in mind i live in charlotte, nc. thanks!

the AA meeting sounds great! but will they care that i am there to observe? would i have to paticipate? the hard part for me will be stepping out of my comfort zone...

Go to a Gospel Baptist church. It's very different! Make sure you ask them first though.

The one I went to didn't mind. Someone asked why I was there and I replied, 'I am interested in learning more about AA.' Everyone around me was very accepting and welcomed me.

An Al-Anon meeting might be better, since it is for those who have had their lives affected by someone who is an alcoholic. And there isn't as much of a secrecy problem, since these aren't the actual alcoholics.
The first Al-Anon meeting I went to, they introduced me to their program, asked for a little information, but when it came time for the group to sit down together, it was completely voluntary. You were not pressured to participate, especially not the first time.
You could probably find a meeting in a local church.

I guess the people at AA wouldnt mind me there if i explained that i am a counselor-in-training and want to learn more about AA.
great ideas, anything else? i need to have 2 experiences this semester. he wants us to be creative, but i am stuck. thanks!

while the fetish club sounds like fun, i am in charlotte, NC, so anything in NYC is out for me. so i think i will do the scientology thing...just need one more awesome idea.
