Super-duper long vendor rant...

EDIT: Just a quick response the some of your responses...I don't think she was trying to dismiss me either, nor do I think she was impolite or rude or anything. My beef with the whole thing is that her first contact with me was to offer any kind of help, and then she never actually did offer help once she found out I didn't get the rings through them. I'm not saying to reimburse me for the cost or anything (though that would be nice LOL!), but some kind of gesture other than 'I'm sorry' would have been nice considering that's what she originally offered. Hope that makes sense, and explains where I'm coming from a bit better. If she just wanted to apologize, that would have been fine. But don't offer to help, and then not actually offer any help.

Here is my original post about the ring fiasco I recently faced...Miserable (long) (EDIT with ring size and vendor rant) . In the end, the jewelers who made the rings were fabulous and fixed everything. However, as for Good Old Gold...I am now going to post the email correspondence I exchanged with an employee there (name will be blocked out), and you girls can take from it what you will. I want to point out that *they* contacted *me*, I did not seek to contact them, even when I learned of the mistake. At this point, I'm not going to bother writing back. I don't want to write an emotionally charged post, so I'll let the words speak for themselves.

1. Hi Catherine,

My name is XXX and I work at Good Old Gold. I haven't been on liweddings in a while and I saw your post for the first time today. I am so sorry for the sizing mistake, I just wanted to apologize for and ask if there is anything I can do to help you fix the problem. Please contact me anytime. [email protected] or XXX-XXX-XXXX ext XXX

Again I do apologize

2. Hi XXX,

How kind of you to apologize for the sizing mistake! While I know, of course, that it wasn't intentionally done, it caused my fiance and I a ton of heartache when the rings arrived (as I'm sure you read in my post). Luckily, the jewelers who made the ring in upstate NY were able to stretch the rings out in such a way that you can't even notice any work has been done. They were fabulous - my fiance and I were warned that they might have to redo them entirely due to the very large size difference, especially with the band being a continuous design, and we were terrified of the price that would be associated with such work.

The total cost to fix the rings, including the shipping and insurance to send the rings back and forth, came to $175.00 ($121.00 for them to fix and ship it to us - they were very generous on the price because they knew how upset we were, and approximately $54 for us to ship it back to them to be fixed).

The mistake has already been corrected on the rings themselves, but now my fiance is only going to be able to give them to me in a proper proposal less than a month before the wedding. I was hoping to be able to wear the engagement ring for longer than that before the wedding, but what can you do. At least the stress and sadness over the rings themselves is finally over.

Anything you would like to offer to help correct the mistake would be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to not only apologize, but to offer help.

Thank you,
Catherine

3. Hi Catherine,

Thank you for the e-mail.

Can I ask what name the order was under and what date you picked up your rings from us?

I would like to show my boss the original bag as see if there is anything she can do.

While I don’t believe it was me who helped you that day, I would like to say that your post has brought to my attention to be extra careful when sizing someone’s finger, I will also bring this to the attention of all my co-workers.

Thank you
XXX

4. Hi XXX,

Again, as I mentioned in both my post and my email, I did not purchase my rings from Good Old Gold, which is the original reason I never contacted the store once I learned of the sizing mistake. I only had my ring size measured there, as I had already contacted a company in upstate NY to make my rings.

I appreciate the attention my post has brought to those at Good Old Gold - hopefully this won't happen to anybody else.

Thank you,
Catherine

5. Hi Catherine,

Thank you for the e-mail. My boss will speak to all the employees about sizing a customer’s finger and double checking that the size is correct.

Not making excuses but I do want to mention that rings fit differently depending on the design, a comfort fit ring fits different then a regular wedding band, also if the ring has a little space inside (meaning it’s not solid) that can fit differently as well. Also your hands change due to temperature. In the winter my rings can fall off in my gloves but in the summer I have to run them under cold water to get them off. Again I’m not making any excuses I’m just trying to think of an explanation as to what could have caused the mistake.

Thank you again,
XXX

6. Hi XXX,

In other words, the moment Good Old Gold found out I didn't buy the rings from them, it's entire tune changed. Everyone felt terrible until they realized I spent no money at the store. Again, this is why I didn't even bother contacting you in the first place. So much for 'let me know what I can do to fix the problem.'

The excuses that you gave me are just that: excuses. The explanation as to what caused the mistake, is that an employee there sized my ring finger incorrectly. End of story. Ring sizes do not change a size and a quarter over the course of a month. The weather did not change drastically. I did not gain 50 pounds. I'm sorry to be so curt with you, as you are probably just following orders from your boss, but it's disappointing. For a moment I actually thought Good Old Gold genuinely felt bad.

At least your employees will be more careful in the future.

Again, sorry to be so curt, but imagine yourself in my position and I'm sure you'd feel the same.

Sincerely,
Catherine

7. Hi Catherine,

Honestly I was not trying to make excuses I was just trying to understand what could have caused the mistake.

Yes it could be the girl just made a mistake. Whether or not you purchased the ring from us I do feel bad which is why I wrote the e-mail and spoke to my boss.

Kindly,
XXX

I don't think she was trying to dismiss you because you didn't buy the ring there...she was just trying to explain why it could have happened.
JMHO

I hope everything worked out in the end.

I don't think she was trying to dismiss you either. I'm sorry you went through this and I'm glad you have a properly fitting ring now.

Considering you didn't even purchase the rings there, I think she was being rather nice and helpful.

Did you pay to have your finger sized there?

To be honest, different types of rings DO size differently. I don't think a store that happened to measure your finger on one day should be in some way responsible for the fact that a ring your ordered somewhere else completely did not fit you... especially if the sizing didn't cost you anything.

I personally think they are being rather nice to you based on those email exchanges.

ETA - the first person who sized my DH for his wedding ring got him at a 7.5 -- he's an 8.25+. It happens. It depends on the day, the temp, the thickness and width of the rings on the sizer, etc. It stinks that you weren't sized correctly, but unfortunately it does happen.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like they did anything wrong. Once she found out you didn't purchase your rings from them s/he could have not written you back at all. It was nice of them to give an explanation and I do believe the explanation they gave. Don't get yourself worked up over this, everything worked out in the end

I have to agree with the girls. When I went to get sized for me engagement ring, I was bloated due to hormones, and it was a humid day. So when they sized me they got a 6 1/2. He had the ring sized down, and when he brought it home, it was still too big. I had the ring sized to make sure they took it down, and it is indeed a 6 1/2. Turns out I am a size 6, and now have to have it resized again. No sweat. It''s just finding the time that is annoying. The guy is only there on weekdays from 10-2.....

I am going to come right out and say it. I think your email was a little out of line; her email explaining why rings change size was completely innocent and not meant to come across as if she was accusing you of having made a mistake. I think she was just genuinely trying to explain what could cause problems and you took it the wrong way, which can happen through emails. But to me, I don't think she did anything wrong.
