anybody know of one... not for the wedding, but for an engagement party, we were thinking of hiring one... but they would have to be really inexpensive... i don't even care how great they are... just someone to play some music for us...

Escapade DJ's. Contact Dan. He's really nice and straightforward. I don't know if they are a member of LIW yet, but when i went in, he actually had Ron's # on his desk to try to join.
Also Vinny from High Voltage. He will FM you his prices if you ask on the VHB board

Do you know where you are having the party at yet?
You might want to have it at a bar that provides a house DJ.
For instance... the bar i DJ at has private parties all the time. If you request the DJ... they will just tell me to come in earlier. They do full catering and open bar (if needed).
We booked Vinny on the spot.... and I never book anything on the spot. He gets great reviews and his prices couldn't be beat. Very nice honest guy

You can always check the pennysavers, they have an entertainment section, thats what my dad did for my mom's surprise party a couple of years ago.

I used Mike D, from L&S Entertainment in Valley Stream. Their prices were the lowest I was quoted for my wedding and he did a fantastic job.

I am having the same guy for my wedding. Was he indeed that good?
Me being a DJ and all... i just wanted somebody cheap and competent since I will be directing how the music goes anyways.
And yeah my bar is in Manhattan... but you should check out other bars and such in Long Island that have similar setups. You may not have to get a DJ if you don't have to. If you have it at a bar... you usually pay XX amount a head for food and beer and they throw the DJ in as part of the package.
